Signing day Odds and ends

mslacatlogoI really have not done an odds and ends post in quite some time, mainly because I have not been coming across enough little pieces of info that would warrant a whole column, but here is one.

  • I forgot to mention that a few other Montana high school athletes should be signing letter of intents with Division teams today, Namely Josh Huestis with the Stanford men’s program and Jordan Phau with Weber State women’s program. If I have missed someone please let me know.
  • To my surprise Libby’s 6-1 forward Jackie Mee will not sign with a d-1 team this fall. In my humble (and sometime wrong) opinion she is at least as talented as some of the Montana women who will be signing today. Before I get hate mail this is not a knock on any one, but an acknowledgment that Mee is a very good player.casey-trujeque
  • There was a nice article on Bobcat recruit /Signee Casey Trujeque and two other of his Price high school teammates were featured in a LA Times article yesterday. The main thrust of the article was about how tiny Price high school will have three players signing letters of intent today with Division 1 schools. One thing to remember though, while Price has a student population of about 100, for some odd reason a lot of the better high school students in the area seem to find themselves at Price high school. Imagine that!

For the record: Price’s, Richard Solomon and Allen Crabbe will sign with California and Casey Trujeque will sign with Montana State.

Odds and Ends: 9-29-09

mslacatlogo

It has been a rather busy September for me so sorry for lack of attention on my blog but it is likely to come in spurts for the next month or so. It has also been kind of slow also. Anyway let’s go into Odds and Ends.

  • Grizzly basketball recruit Thomas Frye has named his favorite as Texas Christian University, but I do not believe TCU has offered him yet. His next four are UC Riverside, Eastern Washington, Montana, and Portland State. I am not sure exactly sure what the order of these next four are but I hear Montana is at or near the top of these four. I believe Tinkle has offered Frye.
  • The Bobcat football team are apparently still recruiting K.J. Cusack a 5-9 wide receiver/ / running back / defensive back / athlete from Santa Maria California. He recently reported at Rivals.com that he holds offers from UC Davis, Portland State and Air Force, but Fresno State, San Jose State, Montana State, and Sacramento State are very involved and are expected to offer soon. He is also starting to get interest from Miami of Ohio, Tulane, Washington State, Oregon State and Cincinnati

Griz Recruit: Francisco Cruz

cruzo

I have been told that Wayne Tinkle’s Grizzly coaching staff is recruiting Francisco Cruz of Western Nebraska JC. Cruz is a 6-4 ½ small forward who played prep ball at Lincoln high school in Englewood Colorado, but is originally from Nogales, Mexico.

While at Lincoln high school he led the team to two consecutive class 4A titles his junior and senior year. His senior year he averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds a game. During the state tournament he upper his scoring average to over 24 points a game. That year he was named 4A- player of the year, and All-Tournament MVP by most Colorado newspapers and prep publications.

This past season at Western Nebraska he averaged 16.5 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists a game while shooting 78% from the charity stripe, 56% from the field and 50% from beyond the three point arc. He was named Western Nebraska’s basketball MVP for the season and earned the male athlete of the year award for the entire college. Cruz was also named to the NJCAA District 9 all regional team.
