Signing day Odds and ends

mslacatlogoI really have not done an odds and ends post in quite some time, mainly because I have not been coming across enough little pieces of info that would warrant a whole column, but here is one.

  • I forgot to mention that a few other Montana high school athletes should be signing letter of intents with Division teams today, Namely Josh Huestis with the Stanford men’s program and Jordan Phau with Weber State women’s program. If I have missed someone please let me know.
  • To my surprise Libby’s 6-1 forward Jackie Mee will not sign with a d-1 team this fall. In my humble (and sometime wrong) opinion she is at least as talented as some of the Montana women who will be signing today. Before I get hate mail this is not a knock on any one, but an acknowledgment that Mee is a very good player.casey-trujeque
  • There was a nice article on Bobcat recruit /Signee Casey Trujeque and two other of his Price high school teammates were featured in a LA Times article yesterday. The main thrust of the article was about how tiny Price high school will have three players signing letters of intent today with Division 1 schools. One thing to remember though, while Price has a student population of about 100, for some odd reason a lot of the better high school students in the area seem to find themselves at Price high school. Imagine that!

For the record: Price’s, Richard Solomon and Allen Crabbe will sign with California and Casey Trujeque will sign with Montana State.

Go here to read the whole article.

  • As I was typing this column I have heard that Montana State men’s program will not be announcing any basketball recruits until tomorrow. That is not surprising. I also do not expect any thing from the Women’s program until tomorrow at the earliest.
  • I am hearing some buzz that the Griz may have another commit. While they have been recruiting the JC ranks for a guard could come in and play right away. They are being selective and patient though. Of the small handful possibly on their list they may chooses to sign a very good high school player instead or just wait until the spring to sign the JC they want. They will not sign a JC for the sake of signing a JC. Here are the guy’s I am hearing the most about currently, high schoolers Jordan Reetz and Kareem Jamar and JC guard Francisco Cruz. I do not feel I have a real good bead on the JC ranks right now so there are most likely others.tre johnson2
  • For the Bobcat Men keep an eye on 6-7 Tre Johnson from Reno. I have heard that he has taken an official visit to Bozeman, so I am figuring he has been offered. He would fit the bill rather nicely as to what I am told Huse is looking for an athletic power forward who can play above the rim. Aside from Josh Huestis he is my personal favorite of all of the power forward I have heard we are looking at. He also played AAU ball with commit (signee by now?) Chris McCall and recruit 6-7 Justin Omogun. Omogun would be my second favorite on the list but I am not sure where we stand with him.
  • OK, this has nothing to do with the signing period or even basketball. The closest I can make it to that subject is to speculate how good of a basketball player Matt Miller could have been for the Bobcats or Griz if he had chosen the smart route and signed today to play basketball instead of that damn sport with the weird looking ball. All-Conference Big Sky by his junior year? Maybe earlier?

In any case BeaverFootball.com who covers Oregon State athletics on the Scout.com network had an interview a few days’ ago with Matt Miller about his recent trip to Oregon Statematt miller

“I really liked everything that Oregon State had to offer,” said Miller. “And Corvallis is a great college town, it reminds me a lot of Helena which is where I live.

“The coaching staff there is outstanding, they’re all great human beings. Coach Riley was a great guy to talk to. They really have a great family atmosphere there.”

“It was more an overall feeling that good things are happening at Oregon State,” said Miller

The article also went on to say that Miller will be taking another official trip to Arizona State on November 28th and also one to Boise State on December 5th. He is also still looking at Arkansas, North Carolina and Stanford.
