Up to speed w/ Bobcat MBB recruiting

I thought I would try to get folks up to speed with what I know, guess, or speculate is going on with Montana State men’s basketball recruiting. Now as always I usually only bat about 50% with these things so everything should be taken with a grain of salt.

Of the four programs that I cover the Bobcat men program is the one program this year that seems to have the most going on.

The Bobcats should have only three scholarships available for the 2011-12 season when Bobby Howard, Eric Rush and Danny Piepoli finish out their eligibility in March. It would not surprise me if another scholarship opened up by next fall – it happens every year- with out know where that scholarship might come from it is hard to speculate on it.

The Bobcats have one solid 2011 commit from Danny Little from Skyview high school in Billings. They also are rumored to have a commit from 6-3 point guard Jordan Castaneda from Huntington Beach California, but I have not heard anything lately to confirm this. Additionally, recently it appears the Bobcats have received commits from a pair German players Johannes (JoJo) Kriegereit and Jermaine Julien Lippert, but at this point it is not know whether these guy’s will be part of the 2011 or 2012 recruiting class.

Odds and Ends: Prospects

Hi folks I have a handful of interesting and some sad, odds and ends about some of the Griz and Bobcat basketball signees / commits that I thought I might share. Some might be a little older than others, but I hope it is something you find interesting.

  • Danny Little from Billings Skyview and Montana State 2011 commit was featured in a Q. and A. article today by the Billing Gazette. Little talks about Skyview’s current season as well as why he choose to commit to the Bobcat program. You should check it out here.
  • Chris McCall from Cheyenne high school in Nevada and a Bobcat 2010 signee was scheduled to play his first game of the post season this past Wednesday, but that did not happen. The Sunset Region boy’s basketball playoffs were postponed this week when Western high school filed in court complaint and motion for a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction was granted until the matter could be heard. At issue Western was forced to forfeit 4 games because a player was ruled ineligible. The court handed down a ruling earlier today giving Western 2 games back. The Sunset Region is now scrambling to reschedule the tourney.

Prospect Update: Little, Autry, Trujeque

I have a couple, well actually three updates on some basketball prospects that have either signed or committed to the Montana State of Montana.

Danny Little 6’8” 2011
Earlier this week I posted an article on Billings Skyview center and Montana State basketball commit Danny Little, being named athlete of the week by a local TV station. I should have waited a day because that night Little went out and had his best game as a high school player against Laurel high school. The 6-foot-8 little scored 22 points, 11 rebounds and eight blocked shots while shooting 75% from the field and he hit all 4 of his free throws. A friend of mine was at that game (as well as a couple others of Skyview’s games this season) and gave his evaluation of Little’s game. He feels Little is just starting to get comfortable with his role as the main man in the middle. He has really evolved quite a bit this summer. Little reminds him a lot of former Hellgate/Griz player Matt Kempfert at this point in his development. Little has not shown quite the mid range game of Kempfert at the same age but Little is a much better interior intimidator / shot blocker. Both players move very similarly in the post. He thinks, Little still has to develop a killer instinct, but after watching him last Thursday, he is figuring it out.

Prospect Update: Danny Little

Bobcat 2011 commit Danny Little has been having a pretty solid junior year and was recently named Billing’s KTVQ Q2 athlete of the week recently. Little who plays for Billing’s Skyview high school is currently averaging 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks a game while shooting 52 % from the field for the 5-1 Skyview.

While just a junior he will not be able to officially sign with the Bobcat program until November of 2010, will not suit up for the Bobcat until the fall of the 2011 season.

Here is a video interview and game tape of Danny Little, and yes it contains the obligatory “yes he is named little but he is really a big guy” comment.

Prospect Update: Bobcat Men

Bobcat 2011 commit - Danny Little

I am going to update the signed and committed players to the Montana and Montana State programs as best I can periodically through out the year. A lot of the info and stats that I quoted here can be found on the individual pages for each prospect. You can access these pages through the “Commitment Page”.

This is the first of the four updates and will feature the Montana State men’s commits / signees.

Some of the prospects I have been able to find a lot of information about their season so far, other not so much. I will continue to try to find as much as I can and post that info on the commitment page.

2010 Signees

  • Casey Trujeque 5-9 PG, Price HS. Price is well into its season with a 9-0 record, but I have not been able to find is a little bit more than the game scores. Price won the season opening Pasadena Tournament. They were the lowest division school in the tourney. Guard Allen Crabbe (California bound) was selected the tournament MVP and Bobcat signee, Casey Trujeque made the all tourney first team. Trujeque’s other star team mate center Richard Solomon was named to the second team all tourney.
  • Chris McCall 6-3 SG, Cheyenne HS– McCall has only three games in so far this season but is leading his team with a 20 point and 5 rebounds a game, average. He is also shooting an impressive 55% from the field, 60% from three point range and 75% from the charity stripe. McCall’s teammate and Eastern Washington signee Jaylen Henry is averaging 11 points 10 rebounds a game. Two other players from Cheyenne are also expected to play college ball.

Future players start their season

The high school basketball season across the United State is just starting to get into high gear, and most of the 18 recruits signed or committed to the four Montana D-1 prospects have already started their season with most of the rest getting under way this coming week-end.

Around Montana a few players started their season last weekend with Carly Selvig’s (Glendive), Lexi Nelson (Butte), Kellie Cole (Bozeman) and Blake Brumwell (Big Sandy) getting a game. The remainder of the Montana players and teams kicking in the next couple of day’s.

From out of the state of Montana, Bobcat women’s signee Ausha Cole leads the pack in games already played with 9 games under her belt. Bobcat men’s signee Chris McCall is the only player to yet kick off his season, but his Cheyenne high school team starts it season tonight.

Montana State’s two Australian recruits Kate Webb and Emily Nelson are a whole different ball game. These two women have already finished their high school career and the whole Australian under 18 basketball system is so different than the here in the United States.

2011 prospect Danny Little commits to Bobcats

Montana State Bobcats

Will Holden, of the Bozeman Chronicle, came up with this commit yesterday but I have a little to busy to comment on it but you may want to check out his Blog entry at the Chronicle for his original entry. Will has promised a follow up post on the commitment so you may want to check in on the Blog after he is back from Cheney covering the Montana State Football game today.

Danny Little of Billings Skyview has committed to play basketball for the Montana State basketball team. Little is currently a 6-8, 215 pound center/forward prospect who according Maxprep.com averaged 4 points, 5 rebounds, 2 blocked shots a game while shooting 35% from the field and 65% from the line last year. He is known as a defensive skills though that his offensive skills. I believe he made an impression on the Bobcat basketball staff at their summer camp this year and that lead to an offer being put forward. Little would sign with the Bobcats in November of 2010, and first wear the Bobcat uniform for the 2011-12 season.

I did not see Little last year but I saw him a couple years ago, when he was a 6-6 freshman. Given his size as a freshman and some obvious developing skills (I thought he had real nice lateral movement for a big guy) I thought he might be a prospect in waiting. Still after tracking his very modest box scores last year I must admit my interest waned some. Obviously though the Bobcat coaching staff saw something they felt was very promising, to offer Little before the start of his junior year.
