Griz MBB Spring 2011 Malte Krame

I heard the Griz were actively recruiting Kramer last December and January. A lot depends on whether he makes it through the NCAA clearing house. He is an odd recruiting for the Griz because I figured that would go with a true Big man to replace Qvale but Kramer is a talent and could make a big impact at the Big Sky level so if they had an in go for the talent.

Malte Kramer 6-7 combo forward
Cuesta junior college
20 points, 2 assists, 1 steal 5 rebounds
45% field goal, 38% 3pt field goal, and 83% free-throw
Year of eligibility: 2 years

Recruiting Notes: Kramer is an import from Germany, who did not receives clearance by the NCAA to play D-1 ball in the fall. I am told that it is expected that he would be cleared by the NCCAA clearing house this winter. I have not heard if this is I have not heard whether this has happened. If he is cleared he will have three year plus a possible redshirt at the next level. If not he will need to return to the JC ranks for next year. Most schools are not aware that he is expected to be a qualifier this year. If he does get qualified his recruitment could take off.

Griz MBB Spring 2011 Recruiting

I am going to look at the Griz men’s basketball recruiting for the spring 2011 regular period. The Griz signed two players last fall which gave them 14 scholarships if all the under class-men return next year. That is 1 scholarship over the 13 maximum allowed by the NCAA. This means that at least one scholarship under class-man will not be returning for next year, if they ended their recruiting with the fall class. If they sign another player this spring that will just mean that one player would have to leave. That is why it is not that surprising to see them not extremely active this winter with the 2011 class.

Still though just about every D-1 program losses at least one underclassmen player for one reason or another so the Griz have to keep their fingers in the 2011 class for insurance.

I have heard that Griz are active with the 2011 class but the names have been slim in coming. Hear are the two I have heard.

Michael Hale 5-9 point guard

Griz MBB Fall signees update

I have been away for awhile, but do not take it personally I am just lazy. Not a lot happening on the Griz recruiting front that I can tell, but I hear they are still somewhat active in the 2011 spring recruiting sweepstakes.

Just to review, Montana men’s team only has one senior this year in Brian Qvale. This spring they signed two high school guards in Kevin Henderson of Auburn high school in Washington and Jordan Gregory of Pueblo East/ That leaves the Griz one scholarship over going into the spring recruiting period, so it is not that surprising that the Griz are not that active in the 2011 class. Still I do have a couple names that I hear the Griz are looking at, so it sounds like they are hedging their bets incase more than one player “decides” to leave. I will get into who the player are in my next post but in the rest of this post I want to look at Henderson and Gregory and their senior season.

Now if you have been following my Twitter account you will already know much of this info.

Bobcat MBB Spring 2011 Michael Hale

This is a look at Bobcat recruiting target Michael Hale of North Idaho JC.  The Griz are also interested Hale and are recruiting pretty hard.

Michael Hale 5-9 Point guard
North Idaho JC
18 points 4 rebounds, 4 assist 2 steals 48% field goal, 36% 3pt field goal, 84% free-throw
Year of eligibility: 2 years

Recruiting Notes: Hale is from the state of Washington and the Bobcats have been tracking him for 3-4 years. He is originally committed to Eastern Washington out of high school but had to go the JC ranks. He is one of the more well known recruits in the North West. He has been listed at 5-7 to 5-9 and that has been a sticking point with his recruitment, but at NIC he has proven he can score and run a team at that level. A lot of schools are showing an interest in Hale including most of the Big Sky, but I have not any firm info on where he will end up, although Montana and Eastern Washington are the most often mention.

Player Summary: Despite his diminutive size Hale is renowned for his dunking skills which should give you an idea of his athleticism. He is a great assist man, but also shots the ball very well from range or in the lane. Shooting are actually on the low side of where he has shoot over the past 4 years.

***Breaking News Henderson Commits***

Some breaking news here.  I have heard from multiple sources that Kevin Henderson from Auburn high school from the state of Washington committed to the University of Montana last night.  Henderson is a 6-3 shooting guard who is the deep threat three point shooter the Griz have been looking for this fall.

Griz Recruit: Kevin Henderson

I have heard that the University of Montana and Wayne Tinkle ‘ basketball coaches are recruiting Kevin Henderson of Auburn high school in Auburn, Washington. Henderson is a 6-3 180 pound shooting guard / small forward prospect that plays in the State of Washington’s South Puget Sound League, which is arguable the toughest league in the state of Washington. The SPSL typically produces 6-12 NCAA division one prospects a year.

Last season for Auburn Henderson averaged 21 points and 7 rebounds a game in leading Auburn to the state championship tournament. Henderson lays along side guard junior Iszia Johnson (16 points, 7 rebounds) who should form this year one of the best guard tandems in the state. Henderson was named South Puget Sound League North 4A first-team all-league as well as first team All-South Puget Sound League.

Henderson is a scorer having had more than a few games of over 30 points last season. He has solid three point range and a quick release, but he also can drive and score in traffic. He has long arms and should be a good defender with a little more work, and is a very good athlete.

Griz Basketball commit: Jordan Gregory

Last week it hit the internet that Pueblo East high school star Jordan Gregory had committed to Montana and have finally gotten enough time to do a little update on Mr. Gregory. When I heard that the grizzlies were recruiting him and had invited him in on an official visit for the Griz Home Coming week end I did profile on him that can be found here. I am not going to repeat what I have already posted their but add to what I have learned since he committed.

I talked to a few friends of mine and no one really claimed to have seen him a lot but, but from what I have gleamed he really sounds like a player very similar to Grizzly freshman Vaughn Autry. At 6-2 he physically has a mature body and a strong frame and knows how to use it. He is a terrific scorer (their is some conflicting published accounts of his scoring average last year of 19 points or 24 points a game), but not a great shooter. At the point guard spot he is a terrific passer and passes well in traffic, but his ball handling skills some feel need to be improved to play the position at the D-1 level. All of that said many feel he is a work in progress and has made great strides the past year or so and could be an absolute steal for the Griz if he keeps improving like he has over the 12-18 months.
