Odds and Ends 10-6-10

More miscellaneous odds and end pieces of information that I have collected over the past week

I have updated all four of the Montana State and Montana recruiting lists. That includes updating some commits and offers. Below are some of the football players out of the lists. It really looks like the Bobcats are looking to sign a couple high quality running backs and the Griz are really looking at an amazing number of high quality quarterback.

Montana State Football Recruits
RB Jarad Leaf 6-2 225 Martinez HS Alhambra CA
RB Tyler Middleton 5-11 180 Midland HS Midland TX – offered
RB DeAndre Jones 6-0 185 Killeen HS Harker Heights TX
OG Steven Oliver 6-2 250 Hamilton HS Chandler AZ

University of Montana Football Recruits
QB Garret Krstich 6-4 215 La Costa Canyon HS Encinitas CA

  • Women basketball – I believe both the Montana State women’s program and the Lady Griz have started official practices for the 2010-11 season. The Bobcats started this past Sunday and I believe the lady Griz started at the beginning of this week. The men’s programs are not allowed to start practices until October 15th.

Bobcat Women pick a 4th Commit

ESPN / Hoopgurlz are reporting that Tricia Binford’s Montana State Women Bobcats have picked up another commitment from Symone Brown of (Richard) Gahr high school in Paramount, California. Brown is a 5-9 wing player who ESPN identifies as a guard prospect but I could also see her playing the small forward spot in Binford’s system.

Last season for Gahr high school she averaged 18 points, 7 rebounds 2 steals and 2 assists a game. She also shot close to 50% from the field, 74 % from the free-throw lines. I do not have her three point shooting percentages but she seems to be a solid three point threat but little streaky from that range. For her efforts she was named First team San Gabriel as well as First team ALL CIF-SOUTHERN SECTION / SCIBCA.

Brown plays much bigger than her 5-9 size. She has a nice combination athleticism and strength that allows her to over power other wing down low or take out side. Aside from scoring she is a solid rebounder and a very good defender.
Division One Scout (D1scout.com) Ranks her as the #19th “Top Recruits” in California 2011 class this year.

The Top 2011 Montana Girls Basketball Prospects (part 1)

Every time a post an article on Montana State and Montana recruiting lists I feel guilty about not publishing recruiting list for either Montana State Women’s or the Lady Griz basketball teams. The truth is it is much more difficult to follow these schools recruiting let along come up with list of their possible recruits. If I did produce a list it would end up being a list of the top Montana athletes and then maybe one or two out of state athletes. That got me thinking about just publishing a list of the top girls basketball players and rumors I have heard about their recruitment.

About a year ago I talked to about a handful of Montana girls basketball experts (at least by my standards) about the girls basketball recruiting. To a person every single one of them, while liking the 2009 and 2012 classes, really thought the 2011 prospect class was one of the weakest in recent history. I even had one predicted that none of this years class would sign with a D-1 program. Twelve or so months later things have changed.

While there is clearly a not big time recruit like a Jos Tinkle or a Kristen Tilleman in the class so far five athletes have committed to D-1 programs, with a couple of other who may or could have signed. Here are the girls’ basketball players who have committed to D-1 programs.

Kayla Dewit 6-1 Columbia Falls – power forward / center
She never played any AAU ball so was not well known out side the northwest, still she received recruiting attention from D-1 programs like Idaho, Montana and Gonzaga. Montana State was on her early and she committed to them early

Bobcats WBB recruit: Jasmine Davis

I have heard from a couple sources that Tricia Binford and her Montana State Bobcat coaching staff are recruiting Jazmine Davis of Valley Christian high school in San Jose, California. The 5-8 Davis is projected by most to be play the point guard spot in college but with her shooting ability I could also see her playing some at the shooting guard spot for the Bobcats, if that is where she ends up.

While I do not have Davis’s complete statistics for last year, I believe she averaged 14 points and 4 assists a game while shooting close to 50% from the both 2 and 3 point range. In the stats I saw she actually was shooting slightly better from three point range than 2 point range. She was named West Catholic Athletic League honorable mention as a sophomore and second team as a junior. Look for her stats to really take off this year as she becomes the focus of Valley Christian’s offense.

She is a true point guard but has out standing range and can score the ball from a variety of ways.

ESPN / GurlzHoops has given her a 92 rating and identified her as the 25th rated 2011 point guard in the nation. Unfortunately they did not have any type of evaluation on her.

The Aussies have landed for Binford’s Bobcats

The Bobcat women’s basketball team welcomed Aussies Kate Webb and Emily Allen into the Bobcat fold this summer as they came over for summer school. I found this video on the Bobcat women’s YouTube page and got a kick out of it. I believe it was shot as the Women’s basketball team was shooting some promotional (and season poster I believe) material for the 2010-11 season.

Webb and Allen have to love the care and attention their teams showed them as they attempted to help them with their English! You have to really appreciate the love and thoughtfulness of teammates that are willing to show their new additions from across the pacific.

Up to speed w/ Bobcat WBB recruiting

This is the third part getting everyone up to speed with the recruiting of the four Montana D-1 basketball program. This post will look at Tricia Binford’s Montana State Women’s basketball program.

The Montana State women have only 2 seniors this year but additionally currently have three open scholarships on their current roster.
As a result the Bobcat Women should have a total of five scholarships to offer this year. That said though, in Binford’s tenure at Montana State she has never filled all 15 scholarships in any given year.

The Bobcats are well on their way to filling out their scholarships with three Montana players already committed to the program. The Montana Class A trio of 5-8 guard Kalli Durham of Miles City, 6-0 guard Jackie Elliot of Billings Senior and 6-2 post Kayla DeWit of Columbia Falls all committed to Binford’s program over the summer. which should leave two spots still to be filled.

Bobcat Women land Jackie Elliot

Jackie Elliott (left) guards Carly Selvig (right)

I have been hearing rumbling from multiple sources over the past few weeks that Billing Central 5-11 Jackie Elliott had committed to the Tricia Binford’s Bobcat basketball program. It now looks like that she indeed has.

Elliott is a 5-11 player who played most positions on the court for Billing Central, but is projected to play the wing (shooting guard and small forward) in college. Last season she averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds a game, while being named First Team Class A All State team.
