Bobcats recruit: LeRon Smith

ESPN is reporting that the Montana State basketball coaches are recruiting LeRon (I have also seen his first name delineated as Leron but I believe this is right) Smith from Morgan Park high school in Chicago Illinois. Smith is a 5-10 senior point guard for Morgan Park.

This past week end the number 20th ranked Morgan Park upset #1 rated Whitney Young high school to take the Chicago City Title. Along the way Morgan Park had to go through a gauntlet of higher ranked team to meet Whitney Young in the championship game. Morgan park features junior wing Wayne Blackshear who is already committed to Louisville for the 2011 recruiting class, Earlier in this season he was averaging over 30+ points a game as 12 rebounds, I am not sure if he was able to keep that torrid pace up but he is a big time scorer. Morgan Park is a very young team but all told their coach feels that 8-9 of the players on its roster will eventually sign with D-1 schools.

Once again I do not have firm stats on LeRon Smith but I believe he is averaging 10-12 points a game while dishing out 9 assists a game. The area though he seems to contributing the most to his team is in leadership and as a lock down defender. He has held a number of very highly touted (and bound for major D-1 schools) Chicago to single digits this season. Smith also boasts decent quickness and athleticism.

Bobcat Women pick up another Australian commit

I have heard that the Tricia Binford and her Montana State basketball program have picked up another commitment from an Australian. I have heard that 6-0 Juliana Paunovic has committed to sign with the Bobcat this spring and joint the team next fall. Paunovic is a small forward / power forward who currently is attending Casper junior college in Wyoming. She hails from the town of Cairns, in the State of Queensland in Australia.

This year at Casper she is averaging 14 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals 1 block, while shooting 46% from the field, 30% beyond the 3 point arc and, 71% free-throw line. As a freshman Paunovic suffered a shoulder injury that limited her games but still managed to average 10 points and 5 rebounds a game. Last summer after undergoing surgery on her shoulder she retuned home and played for Cairns Dolphins U20 Round 11 team and averaged 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game.

Casper currently is rated in the National Junior College Division 1 top 20, and has a very balanced team and will most likely send multiple players to the D-1 level.

Pauvovic last season was named to the Region IX Academic All-Region first team.

Here are some comments from Casper College coach Dwight Gunnare

Erica Perry named POW

Montana State’s Erica was named Big Sky player of the week for last week. I did not think Erica had a chance to take the award given that the Bobcat’s had only a single game last week. A lot of times those single game weeks do not get a lot of love by who ever picks the award, but Perry did have an outstanding week end and she was awarded for it. Below is the official press release by the conference.

Congrats to Perry!!

OGDEN, Utah (February 22, 2010) – Montana State’s Erica Perry has been named the Big Sky Player of the Week for games played the week of February 15th through the 21st. This is first weekly award this season for the senior forward from Lynwood, Calif. The Bobcats snapped Sacramento State’s seven-game winning streak in the Hornets’ Nest this weekend. Montana State has now won four of its last five games.

This is Perry’s first weekly award of the season

Bobcat recruit: Brock Lutes

Oregonpreps.com (part of the Rivals.com network) is reporting that the Bobcat men’s basketball team is recruiting 2011 prospect Brock Lutes. Lutes is a 6-3 218 pound shooting guard for Newburg high school.

Lutes currently is averaging 21 points 9 rebounds and 5 assists, a game for Newburg high school despite missing quite a few games this year due to injury and a suspension. This is first year with Newburg as he played his sophomore year at Sherwood high school and was a second team all state player.

Lutes is a very good all around player with good ball skills, and deep shooting range but his asset at this point is his strength where he can out muscle most other guards he comes up against. The big question mark is his foot speed and ability to defend quicker opponents.

The three toughest Prospects

Well I have been following as best I can the future Bobcat and Grizzly basketball players as best I can this winter but there are three prospects out there who I have been having a heck of a time getting any info on the past 2-3 months. Two of them are pretty obvious for their locations. Emily Allen and Kate Webb the dynamic Aussie dual from Runaway Bay in Queensland Australia. The other is Casey Trujeque from Price high school in Los Angelis California. Here though is a little bit of what I do know.

The thing you have to remember about Allen and Webb and Australia. Given that it is actually summer down under and their school year ended sometime in November. Webb and Allen have already graduated from high school and are doing what ever high school graduate do while waiting for college to start … 8-10 months later.

I found a web page that indicates Allen, a 6-0 forward/guard is currently playing for the Queensland state U20 (under – 20 years old team). After two games Webb is averaging 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals a game in fewer than 20 minutes a game. This is not bad considering this is an all star team made up mostly of players 2-3 years older than Allen.

Sorry folks I have not been able to find any info on what Kate Webb is up to, although I do not believe she is playing for the Queensland U20 team, but I could be wrong.

Griz recruit: Stefan Buratto

I have heard that Wayne Tinkle and his staff are recruiting Stefan Buratto from Sandpoint Idaho. Buratto is a 6-3 180 pound shooting guard who is burning up the net in Northern Idaho.

Buratto is an explosive scorer who has deep range but also has a very good intermediate game. Originally from Spokane Washington he joined the Sandpoint high school team during his junior year where he averaged 15 points a game. This season though he has exploded on the scene and I believe leads the entire State in scoring with a 24 point a game average. I do not have the official stats but I believe he also averaged 8 rebounds and 4 assists a game, but he is primarily known as a scorer.

Sandpoint has had a tough season this year currently with a 6-15 season as a result Buratto has double and triple team coverage as teams have tried to stop him, still he managed to dominate the score board, including two games where he has scored 40 or more points. With the play-offs though underway Sandpoint is the one team all the high ranked teams fear.

Buratto plays in the same conference as future Bobcat Shawn Reid (Post Falls high school). While Burrato won the head to head battle with Reid – 38 pts ave. vrs 19 pts ave, – Post Falls won the head to head battle with two victories (94-75 and 79-72).
