Bobcat & Griz FB Recruit: Nelo Butler

I am not doing a lot of individual football prospect stories this year, I just do not seem to have the time, but when I come across a Montana prospect I most likely will. That is the case with Helena high school running back prospect Nelo Butler. Recently did a recruiting story on Butler that brought him to my attention.

Butler a 5-9 200 pound running back prospect was receiving a broad range of recruiting interest from numerous schools including both the Bobcats and the grizzly football programs before he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a Helena High’s July camp.

Last season Butler rushed for 1,047 yards last season averaging 95.2 yards a game. He also averaged about 10 yards a game in receiving yards.

Bobcat & Griz FB recruit: Jack Bonner

I have heard that both the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzly coaching staffs are recruiting Jack Bonner of Glacier Peak high school in Snohomish, Washington. Bonner is a 6-3 (he grows to 6-4 when playing basketball ) and 200 pound wide receiver prospect. He also plays the defensive back position for Glacier Peak.

This past season he accumulated 774 total yards on 50 receptions and 5 touch downs. This was an improvement over his sophomore year statistics when he racked up 464 total yards on 39 receptions and 5 touch downs,

Bobcat & Griz FB Recruit: Zach Keiser

I have heard that both the Montana State Bobcat and Montana Grizzly football staffs are recruiting Zach Keiser of Coeur D’Alene high school in Idaho. Keiser is 5–9, 185 pound athlete who primarily being recruited as a running back prospect, but is also getting some looks at the line backer spot.

As a junior for Coeur d’Alene high school he put up 1131 yard rushing on 179 carries and 16 touch downs. He also accounted for 236 yards receiving on 20 receptions and one touch downs. On the defensive side of the ball he had 6 solo tackles, 15 assisted tackles, 1 quarterback sack, and 1 interception.

For his efforts Keiser was named 5A IEL offensive most valuable player, MVP all League, MVP All North Idaho Team, and 2nd team All State Idaho Running Back.

Griz FB recruiting: A couple quick ones

I am breaking from my normal pattern of doing individual post for each Football recruit to do a two for one post. I do not have enough information on either to really write enough about each in a post so I am going to combine.

The athletes that appear to be getting recruiting interest from the Montana Grizzly football staff are Dawson Graham from California and Shaq Jenkins from California.

Dawson Graham is a 6-3 260 pound Offensive guard prospect from Foothill high school in Pleasanton, California. I do not have a lot of information on Graham, and usually it is tough to find any info on O line men this early in the recruiting season, but an interesting note is that he is also a pretty good pitcher on the Foothills baseball team. I do not know if he is good enough to get a collegiate interest but he is good enough to get some accolades.

He currently is getting recruiting interest from Boise State, Cal Poly, Montana, Oregon State, and UC Davis, but I do not believe he has any offers as of yet.

Bobcat & Griz FB recruit: Troy Castle

I have heard that both the Bobcat and Griz football staffs are recruiting Troy Castle from Gig Harbor high school in the Gig Harbor, Washington. Castle is a 5-11 wide receiver and defensive back prospect, but is mainly being recruited by the two schools as a wide receiver.

I do not have any of Castles stats for 2009 but he was the only player last season named first team All Narrows League on both offence (slot back) and defense (defensive back). Previous to 2009 he played quarterback and lead Gig Harbor to a Narrows League Championship, as a sophomore.

Castle is an all around athlete and also plays varsity basketball and runs sprints for the track team.

Castle has been timed at 4.6 in the 40 yard dash, and has runs a 11.75 in the 100 meters, 23.4 in the 200 meters, and 51.8 in the 400 meters.

Bobcat & Griz FB recruit: Tyler Rutt

I have heard that both the Bobcat and grizzly football coaching staffs are recruiting Tyler Rutt from Hamilton high school in Chandler Arizona. Rutt is a 6-0 195 pound outside linebacker but because of his height may end up playing the safety position in college. Hamilton high school went undefeated in 2009 and won it’s second strait 5A championship.

For his junior year Rutt had 48 unassisted tackles, 64 assisted tackles 5 sacks, 6 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries. For his efforts Rutt earned second-team all-region and honorable mention all-state honors.

Rutt runs a 4.67 40 yard dash and has a 28 inch vertical. In the weight room he has a maximum 265 pound bench and a maximum 350 pound squat

Here is an evaluation from last fall.

Griz FB Recruit: Joseph Farmer

The Griz football coaching staff is recruiting Joe Farmer of Mount Si high school in North Bend, Washington. Farmer is a 6-5, 230 pound Tight End prospect , but also plays on the defensive line for Mount Si.

Farmer was named Second team all KingCo 3A/2A this past season and recently was named the Tight End MVP of the Ultimate 100 camp (which features athletes from most of the west coast states). I do not have his complete stats but I believe through his first 9 games of the season he had managed 170 yards on11 receptions and 4 touch downs.

Farmer is a multi-sport athlete for Mount Si having played on the varsity basketball team as well as being Mount Si top javelin , long jump and triple jump player on the track team.

Scott Eklund of had the following evaluation of Farmer at the end of this past season.

Griz FB Recruit: Thomas Vincent

I have heard that the Grizzly football staff is recruiting Thomas Vincent from Kings high school in Seattle, Washington. Vincent is a very prolific 6′-0″ 195 pound quarterback who really raised some eye brows last year.

Vincent was named Everett Herald newspaper All Area QB, Cascade League Offensive MVP, and number 5 in the nation by in total offence in the nation by a quarterback. His number were impressive.

Vincent passed for a total 2584 yards last season on 235 pass attempts with 126 completions and 41 touch downs. Those are pretty darn impressive numbers, but did I mention that he rushed 205 times for a total 1621 yards and 21 touch downs. Yes boys and girls I am a basketball guy but even I am pretty darn impressed with 4205 total yards of offence and 62 total touch downs.

Hats off to Mr. Vincent.

Griz FB Recruit: Kraig Akins is reporting that the Montana Grizzly football coaching staff is recruiting Kraid Akins from Thurston high school in Springfield, Oregon. The 6′-1″ 265 pound, Akins is primarily receiving most of his recruiting interest as a offensive center, but is also an all state defensive lineman and punter to boot. Just for good measure he also played a little at running back to also.

Last season Akins was named first team All league as a Offensive line man, defensive tackle and punter. He was also named All State 5A first team O .Line and second team D. Line.

I read where Akins has recently slimmed down some from last year and plans to switch to the Offensive center spot, where most college are projecting him to play at the next level, to the center spot. It is said that he has really helped his quickness with the weight reduction.

On defense Akins recorded 31 solo tackles and 21 assists last season for 42.5 total tackles. He also accounted for 33 punts with a total yardage of 1067 and a 32 yard average. Fifteen of his punts were within the 20 yard line. Akins was also used as a short yardage running back at times for Thurston high school. On 11 carries rushed for 46 yards and 4 touch downs.

Griz FB recruit: John Wolfe

The Griz football staff is recruiting John Wolfe of John Barlow high school in Gresham, Oregon. Wolfe is a 6-2, 290 pound Offensive guard prospect, but also plays the defensive tackle spot.

Barlow last year, was named to the Oregon Class 6A Mt. Hood Conference second team on both the offense and defense side of the ball. Wolfe also wrestled for the John Barlow high school team this year.

Here is a evaluation from

OL, 6-2/291, Gresham (Ore.) Barlow
Wolfe has been a name that’s been on the radar the past few years, especially after he impressed last summer at the All-Poly Camp in Hawaii. He impressed again on Sunday and was one of the top linemen in the event. The MVP for offensive linemen went to Sioasi Aiono, and he deserved it, but Wolfe wasn’t far behind at all. Wolfe was super aggressive and took more reps than any other offensive linemen at the event. He didn’t have great knee bend, but he more than made up for it with great technique, allowing him to handle virtually any defensive linemen he faced.
