Signing Day Preview: Griz Men

This Wednesday will be the start of the spring signing day which will go until mid May and I wanted to update on various rumors and as well as my opinion (guess) on what the four programs are doing and who they could sign during the late period.

The current trend that all four programs have been following the past 3-4 years is to primarily sign high school kids in the early period and JC transfers in the late period, and this year they look to no different.

Montana Men:

Signed in the Fall:

Michael Weisner 6-7 Combo Forward – Walla Walla, WA
Vaughn Autry 6-2 Combo Guard – Gardenia CA
Billy Reader 6-8 Forward / Center – Lake Owsego, OR

Commits

Kareem Jamar 6-5 Guard/Forward – Los Angeles, CA

OK this is were as a Bobcat fan I might get into trouble with the GrizNation, but since January I have been hearing rumblings that Jamar commit to the Grizzly is more of a commit if he end ups “going that level” but he may reconsider if he gets a bigger offer. The problem, though, is that when ever I ask someone who the “other schools” might be I never get a firm answer. So is this really Jamar’s thinking or is this some “experts” opinion. Recently I had the following exchange with Greg Hicks of Scout.com

Chris Henry Future Griz?

I was hearing the Last 10 day’s that the Griz had landed a commit from a JC player to finish out their 2010 recruiting class but I was having a hard time nailing down the story. I think I have it now, but it is a little confusing.

The Griz, more specifically assistant coach Freddie Owens have been recruiting Chris Henry from Garden City junior college in Kansas for most of the winter, and I am told about a week to 10 days ago Henry committed to play for Montana next year. With a commitment gained for their last scholarship the Griz canceled further prospects visits to Missoula. A couple days’ later the folks at Cal Northridge came a calling on Henry and convinced him to take another official visit to their campus. This kind of thing can really throw a monkey wrench into a school’s recruiting plans. I have heard the Griz are trying to reschedule the other prospects but it has become a logistic problem for some. It is not sure as of right now whether the scholarship offer from Montana is still on the table but a few sources tell me they are not at all happy with Henry.

Chris Henry is a 5-10 (although I have also seen him listed at up to 6-0) point guard who originally is from Milwaukee Wisconsin. He attended Bradley Tech High School where he averaged 17 points per a game and was named to the city all conference team. He was also an all conference football player as well.
