Griz MBB Fall signees update

I have been away for awhile, but do not take it personally I am just lazy. Not a lot happening on the Griz recruiting front that I can tell, but I hear they are still somewhat active in the 2011 spring recruiting sweepstakes.

Just to review, Montana men’s team only has one senior this year in Brian Qvale. This spring they signed two high school guards in Kevin Henderson of Auburn high school in Washington and Jordan Gregory of Pueblo East/ That leaves the Griz one scholarship over going into the spring recruiting period, so it is not that surprising that the Griz are not that active in the 2011 class. Still I do have a couple names that I hear the Griz are looking at, so it sounds like they are hedging their bets incase more than one player “decides” to leave. I will get into who the player are in my next post but in the rest of this post I want to look at Henderson and Gregory and their senior season.

Now if you have been following my Twitter account you will already know much of this info.

Griz Basketball commit: Jordan Gregory

Last week it hit the internet that Pueblo East high school star Jordan Gregory had committed to Montana and have finally gotten enough time to do a little update on Mr. Gregory. When I heard that the grizzlies were recruiting him and had invited him in on an official visit for the Griz Home Coming week end I did profile on him that can be found here. I am not going to repeat what I have already posted their but add to what I have learned since he committed.

I talked to a few friends of mine and no one really claimed to have seen him a lot but, but from what I have gleamed he really sounds like a player very similar to Grizzly freshman Vaughn Autry. At 6-2 he physically has a mature body and a strong frame and knows how to use it. He is a terrific scorer (their is some conflicting published accounts of his scoring average last year of 19 points or 24 points a game), but not a great shooter. At the point guard spot he is a terrific passer and passes well in traffic, but his ball handling skills some feel need to be improved to play the position at the D-1 level. All of that said many feel he is a work in progress and has made great strides the past year or so and could be an absolute steal for the Griz if he keeps improving like he has over the 12-18 months.

Odds and Ends 10-6-10

More miscellaneous odds and end pieces of information that I have collected over the past week

I have updated all four of the Montana State and Montana recruiting lists. That includes updating some commits and offers. Below are some of the football players out of the lists. It really looks like the Bobcats are looking to sign a couple high quality running backs and the Griz are really looking at an amazing number of high quality quarterback.

Montana State Football Recruits
RB Jarad Leaf 6-2 225 Martinez HS Alhambra CA
RB Tyler Middleton 5-11 180 Midland HS Midland TX – offered
RB DeAndre Jones 6-0 185 Killeen HS Harker Heights TX
OG Steven Oliver 6-2 250 Hamilton HS Chandler AZ

University of Montana Football Recruits
QB Garret Krstich 6-4 215 La Costa Canyon HS Encinitas CA

  • Women basketball – I believe both the Montana State women’s program and the Lady Griz have started official practices for the 2010-11 season. The Bobcats started this past Sunday and I believe the lady Griz started at the beginning of this week. The men’s programs are not allowed to start practices until October 15th.

Odds and Ends 9-23-10

I have not gone on another extended holiday, I have just been slammed the past week. Hopefully by next Monday I will back and running and finally finish the my basketball previews with The Lady Griz

  • During these times when I get bogged down in real world stuff, if you need a recruiting fix check out my Twitter to get your fix. Typically I will post rumors as I hear them and ahead of the blog, while I do my research.
  • If you were following my Twitter feed you would have heard that Montana State men’s basketball has offered Brandan Walton a 6-2 guard from Casper Junior College and Reggie Shaw from Snow Junior College in Utah. I will have more info on both these guys here on my blog when I get a little more time.
  • Former Bobcat walk-on point guard Brian Louff, who left the program this past spring has transferred to Clark College a NAIA basketball program located in Iowa. Louff will be on scholarship at Clark College and is close to where he played his junior college ball.

Odds & Ends (9-13-10)

More Odds and ends from last week, and stick around to the end of the post where I unveil a new feature in Odds and Ends.

  • As I reported last week Bobcat head coach Brad Huse and Grizzly Wayne Tinkle accompanied by recruiting assistants are out on the recruiting trail meeting with recruits and their parents at their homes as well as checking out work outs and talking to coaches. As a contact period this is the time when the coaches have the most latitude in recruiting and communicating with prospects. I have reports of coaches making appearances in California, Arizona, Colorado and Wisconsin.
  • I had a person contact the site and tell me that Colorado point guard Jordon Gregory will be visiting the University of Montana campus this week end. This source is not one of my regulars, so I am trying to confirm.
  • I heard last week that Wayne Tinkle has offered point guard Mitchell Farr from Racine Case high school in Wisconsin. Along with Montana, High Point, Jacksonville, and Rhode Island have also offered Farr. I hear Montana either have or will shortly have a home visit with Farr and his family.
  • I have added 2 players to MSU football and two to UM Football recruiting lists. Additionally I have updated a few players who I have been told been offered as well as a few players who have committed else where.

Griz recruit: Jordon Gregory

I have heard that the Grizzly basketball program is recruiting Jordon Gregory from Pueblo East high school in Pueblo Colorado. Gregory is 6-2 point guards who help lead Pueblo East in to the state championship tournament.

Last season Gregory averaged 19 points and 4 assists a game. Gregory also shot to 50% from the field last season. For his efforts he was named first team All S-CL as well as 4A First Team All-State, by The Denver Post.

Gregory is an athletic play maker who can at times last year was pretty unstoppable driving to the hoop, where he could score or kick the ball to the open man id double team. He has a great work ethic and very high basketball IQ.

For most of the summer it was assumed that he would sign with Northern Colorado. He attended their camp and was considered to be their unofficial camp MVP. In a newspaper article after the N. Col. camp Gregory even said that Northern Colorado was where he wanted to play. From what I understand though Northern Colorado pulled it offer when the received a commitment from Dylan Elias a 6-0 point guard from San Antonio Texas.
