Odds and Ends 8-24-09

mslacatlogoAs I indicated earlier aside from some assorted basketball commitments there is not a lot of news to report. Both programs at both schools are trying to make arrangements to have prospects visit campus this September and everyone is getting all worked up over the start of the football season. This Odds and ends post will be shorter than normal and is mostly an update.

  • As an update on my Lady Griz basketball 2009-10 Roster article keep an eye on true freshman guard / forward Kenzie De Boer she is really impressing. I think she will make the starting line up very early in her career and once she gets it she is not going to give it up.
  • In my Bobcat Women’s basketball 2009-10 Roster post, I plugged JC transfer Beata Bak into the starting spot at center. It appears that 6-3 senior center Jamie Thornton is having a very nice summer and may be the center to beat for that starting spot. In any case competition is good and both will play significant minutes this winter. Ashley Albert also continues to impress.
  • A correction to Bobcat men’s basketball 2009-10 Roster, I stated that all of the Bobcat men were on campus this past July-August for second section of the summer semester. In fact I am told that true freshman guard / forward Marc Bourgault was not able to make it Bozeman this summer but had other commitments in France. He will be arriving at the start of the fall semester.

Bobcat’s and Grizzly’s recruit Minnetonka

The Bobcat and Griz have always recruited Minnesota pretty hard, but with North Dakota State moving up to D-1 it has been a little more difficult. Both the Cat’s and Griz have been recruiting Minnetonka High school in Minnetonka Minnesota. The two players that they have been showing interest in are Cole Stefan (#34) and Tor Anderson (#23)

Both the Cats and Griz have been showing interest in Cole Stefan. Stephen a 6-4 shooting guard just finished his junior season where he averaged 19 points a game. That was a 600% increase over his sophomore season when he buried deep in the Minnetonka bench. Minnetonka, a traditional Minnesota power in basketball, had seven players who accepted college scholarships in 2008. Stephen is now considered to be one of the top basketball prospects (#3) in Minnesota in the 2010 class, and is ranked by Rivals and Scouts as a 3 star prospect. Montana State was the first D-1 team to offer Stephan well over a year ago, but since then he has picked up 8 more scholarship offers and more schools who have recreantly stated to get into the recruiting picture. Stefan’s offer list includes Drake, Northern Iowa, Illinois State, Nebraska, Colorado State, UW-Milwaukee, Montana State, Tulsa, and Oral Roberts. Other schools that have recently become involved are Arizona State, Gonzaga, Montana, Columbia, William and Mary, Marquette, and Minnesota.

Cole Stefan’s teammate Tor Anderson was also been offered by the Bobcats close to a year ago. Tor (a great Minnesota name) is a 6-3 185 lb shooting guard ranked who was ranked 12th prospect in Minnesota prior to this past season. Tor played for Prior Lake High school during his sophomore season averaging 15.3 points, 3 assist and 4 rebounds a game, but decided to transfer to Minnetonka high school to play with his best friend and AAU team-mate Cole Stefan for this past season. Anderson then ran into problems with the Minnesota transfer rules and was not allowed to play varsity ball for Minnetonka, this year, and was forced to play on the Minnetonka JV team. Needless to say he dominated at that level. In one game he hit 7 of 9, 3 point shots while scoring 32 points, and sitting out the much of the 3rd and all of the 4th quarter. Anderson is a deep three point threat, but also is also strong enough to post up smaller/skinnier guard down low. He is not he most athletic player but very crafty. Montana State has been recruiting him for close to a year now and are considered the favorite in landing his service at this early stage. Anderson and his family took an unofficial visit to MSU last December to check out the campus and take in a game. He is an early priority for the Cats 2010 class. (Sorry I could not find a picture that was worth a damn for Tor)
