Recruiting List Observations

Kind of a part two follow up to my New 2011 Recruiting List post of a few days ago. I wanted to make a few observations on the recruiting lists. First though I also wanted to comments on the contents of the lists in general.

You have to remember that these lists are an accumulation of a handful of sources, from Rivals, scout.com, ESPN, news papers and also the message boards. Occasionally also I get leads from friends, and sometimes parents, about out possible recruiting targets- although this is more true about basketball than football. Some of the names on the list for a variety of reason could be more serious recruits that other. There are plenty of examples of coaches saying hello to an athlete and with in days it is out on the web that a kid is being recruited by that coach even though he really is not.

There also are examples of athletes on the lists who I may have heard, a while back, that a program was recruiting but as of recently I have seen little evidence that they were still active with that athlete. Two examples of that might be 6-11 center Antonio Worthy and 5-10 Andrew Bendolph for the Griz and Bobcat basketball programs respectively. Both of these guys I had heard were receiving interest from these programs over a year ago but currently I am not sure if either program is still showing an interest. Still I keep their names on because I simply do not know and it is not uncommon to see a name resurface.

By watching who the programs are recruiting you can often tell what the coaches are trying to accomplish with their recruiting classes. Here are my observations.

Bobcat recruit: Andrew Bendolph

I have been told that the Montana State men’s basketball program is recruiting Andrew Bendolph from Wheelersburg high school in Ohio. The junior Bendolph is a point guard prospect who I have seen listed any where from 5-10 to 6-0. He transferred to Wheelersburg this year after playing for Portsmouth high school, where he was a two year starter.

At Portsmouth Bendolph averaged 14 points a game as a freshman, and 16 points a game during his sophomore year. While Portsmouth and Wheelersburg play in the same conference, Wheelersburg is historically the better “basketball school” and has a couple D-1 prospects on its roster. I do not have the official stats for Wheelersburg but I am told that Bendolph is currently averaging 18 points a game.
