Odds and Ends 12/30/09

It has been quite a while since I have done an Odds and Ends post but I have a handful of thing that are worth mentioning but maybe not in a full post by themselves.

  • In the in case you missed it category Helena Capital’s Matt Miller committed to Boise State a couple day’s ago. Sorry nothing from me at the time but I had a few balls in the air, but this sounds like a great choice by Mr. Miller. As a matter of fact I think Arizona State and Stanford would also have been great choices as well. Here is a quote Miller gave to Rick Kimbrel of Blue-Turf.com (part of the Rivals.com network).

“When I went down to Boise State for my visit,” Miller said. “I just felt so comfortable and thinking about it I felt that at Boise I would be the most happy for the next couple of years of my life.

“Boise State is a great football team,” Miller said. “They are a top 10 football team year in and year out. That is very enticing to me.

“The school as well is on the rise academically,” Miller said. “I kind of want to get into wildlife biology and ultimately become a college coach so I felt at Boise State, I could accomplish all those goals.

Signing day Odds and ends

mslacatlogoI really have not done an odds and ends post in quite some time, mainly because I have not been coming across enough little pieces of info that would warrant a whole column, but here is one.

  • I forgot to mention that a few other Montana high school athletes should be signing letter of intents with Division teams today, Namely Josh Huestis with the Stanford men’s program and Jordan Phau with Weber State women’s program. If I have missed someone please let me know.
  • To my surprise Libby’s 6-1 forward Jackie Mee will not sign with a d-1 team this fall. In my humble (and sometime wrong) opinion she is at least as talented as some of the Montana women who will be signing today. Before I get hate mail this is not a knock on any one, but an acknowledgment that Mee is a very good player.casey-trujeque
  • There was a nice article on Bobcat recruit /Signee Casey Trujeque and two other of his Price high school teammates were featured in a LA Times article yesterday. The main thrust of the article was about how tiny Price high school will have three players signing letters of intent today with Division 1 schools. One thing to remember though, while Price has a student population of about 100, for some odd reason a lot of the better high school students in the area seem to find themselves at Price high school. Imagine that!

For the record: Price’s, Richard Solomon and Allen Crabbe will sign with California and Casey Trujeque will sign with Montana State.

Rivals features Matt Miller and Helena Capital

miller7

Rivals.com has two free articles up today featuring both Matt Miller and his Helena Capital football team. The articles are by Dallas Jackson of Rivals High. Here is a short excerpt from the first on Matt Miller:

Montana’s No. 1 player narrows list

The No. 1 player in the state of Montana has six schools left on his list.

“It is surreal,” three-star athlete Matt Miller said. “Sometimes I want it to be over and live a normal life, but I always feel very thankful for the opportunities I have.”

Miller and the 10-0 Helena (Mont.) Capital High Bruins are set to make a run at a fourth consecutive state title and while Miller is quick to talk about his team, right now the focus is on him.

Odds and Ends: 10-7-09

mslacatlogoI have been very busy the past month so sorry for the lack of attention to my Blog, but here are some more odds and ends.

  • The official start of basketball practice is just around the corner. Technically the coaches and players have been able to have limited practices since September 15th, on October 17th at 7:00PM the official start of practice. I do not know at this time what each program has planned for the first practice, but typically neither Binford, Huse, Selvig nor Tinkle have been up for any theatrics for the start of the season. Usually they have been quite boring. I will have a post updating, the program’s plans before the 17th.

  • Speaking of October 17th, the Griz men’s program will be hosting 6-6 guard forward Jordan Reetz from Fall Creek high school in Wisconsin on that week end. Last week end the Griz have two official visitors, but I only have bits and pieces on which they were. Look for this week end to be a very good recruiting week-end for the Griz. Homecoming is a huge week end not only for the football but also basketball. The basketball coaches have really cashed in on this week-end over the years.
  • Former Griz assistant coach (under former head coach Kennedy) Ronnie Dean was named last week as head coach of Highland college in Illinois. He was the assistant there and was promoted to head coach when the former head coach left. Here is an article on the hiring. Dean was let go by the Griz after one year, despite being an outstanding recruiter for the Griz. Dean lands recruits, but seems to has burnt a lot of bridges in the state of Montana and else where. In the short term I expect Highland to become a very good team.

Odds and Ends: 9-29-09

mslacatlogo

It has been a rather busy September for me so sorry for lack of attention on my blog but it is likely to come in spurts for the next month or so. It has also been kind of slow also. Anyway let’s go into Odds and Ends.

  • Grizzly basketball recruit Thomas Frye has named his favorite as Texas Christian University, but I do not believe TCU has offered him yet. His next four are UC Riverside, Eastern Washington, Montana, and Portland State. I am not sure exactly sure what the order of these next four are but I hear Montana is at or near the top of these four. I believe Tinkle has offered Frye.
  • The Bobcat football team are apparently still recruiting K.J. Cusack a 5-9 wide receiver/ / running back / defensive back / athlete from Santa Maria California. He recently reported at Rivals.com that he holds offers from UC Davis, Portland State and Air Force, but Fresno State, San Jose State, Montana State, and Sacramento State are very involved and are expected to offer soon. He is also starting to get interest from Miami of Ohio, Tulane, Washington State, Oregon State and Cincinnati

Odds and ends: 9-8-09

I am back and here we go.huestis5

  • CMR’s Josh Huestis took his first official visit this past week-end with more planned in the following weeks. I have been hearing conflicting reports, but it is possible that Harvard has been dropped from his visit. Two new schools I have heard have jumped into the mix seriously. The first is no big surprise to me and that is Mike Montgomery’s U. of California. Given Montgomery’s connections to the state I am only surprised it took so long. The one that surprised me is Georgetown. Not that he would not be a good fit for the Big East School, but more that they just sprung out of nowhere. Keep your eye’s peeled on California, Stanford, USC, and Georgetown.
  • Speaking of official visits, IowaPreps.com (part of the Rivals.com network) is reporting that jokDau Jok a 6-3 shooting guard from Des Moines, Iowa will be taking an official visit to Montana on October 9-11th.  I hear, Jok  attended the Griz basketball camp this July.  Here is what Jok had to say about his visits so far.

“Right now, I have three officials setup. On the 19th of September, I’m going to North Dakota. The following week of the 26th, I am going to Pennsylvania. On October 9-11 I am going to Montana. That is what I have right now.”

“Not really. I don’t want to judge any yet until I go to their campus and see what they are about. I want to know about their academics, the basketball team, where I’d live, and what help I’d get with academics. I know all that stuff with SIU-E. I’m clear with them and I know everything about them. I know what they have to offer with academics.”

Odds and Ends – 8/10/09

mslacatlogoThe theme of last week was commitments, with what a seemed like a large number of basketball prospects pulled the trigger and committed to programs last week. I should be updating the recruit list shortly because a handful of Bobcat and Griz prospects, have committed else where. As you may have noticed I posted a couple Lady Griz commits last week. I have also heard some rumblings of a few other commits and I am trying to verify. I actually was told last week of a potential 4th Bobcat men’s commit but I am now pretty sure that info was bogus. On with odds and ends.

MATTMILLER4_21150

  • Matt Miller of Helena capital continues to create buzz on the internet recruiting sites, as new schools hope to become involved. According to an article posted early last week on HawgSports.com (the U of Arkansas site on Rivals.com) Miller has added Arkansas to his short list, thanks in large part to the respect Miller has for former Carroll College and Helena capital star and now Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino. Here is a quote from Miller.

“If Coach Petrino calls I will certainly listen,” Miller said. “First off, Arkansas is in the SEC and that speaks for itself. I followed Coach Petrino at Louisville and I know what he did there. He’s a coach I would like to play for at Arkansas.”

In an article appearing yesterday on BroncoCountry.com (a Boise State site on the Scout.com network). Miller’s short list continues to be Oregon, Oregon State, Boise State, Stanford, and Arizona State. He also states he is in no real rush to make his decision
