Josh Huestis: Pangos Sweet Sixteen Tournament

huestis

Josh Huestis participated in the 2009 Pangos Sweet Sixteen tournament this week-end for the Belmont Shore AAU club out of California. The tournament took place California and did feature some of the top AAU teams in California, Arizona and Nevada. It sounds like Josh had quite the coming out party, as Belmont Shore went 4-1 in the tournament. Derrick Fazendin GOAZCATS.com had the following evaluation of Huestis’s play.

Josh Huestis

Josh Huestis: The 6-foot-6, power forward wasn’t the biggest name on Arizona’s list coming into the tournament, but he served up one of the bigger performances of the night.

Huestis finished with 13 points, including a clutch three pointer to bring his team within a single point with 30 seconds left to play in the game.

Not only does he have a flair for the dramatics, but he also gets down and scraps for the ball, as it seemed as if Huestis was on top of every loose ball and rebound.

He made his living in the paint, powering through contact and finishing at the rim. He did not show much of a jump shot or post game, but he still likely saw his overall stock go up Friday night.

There have been rumors floating about that Huestis not play for CMR this season, and instead will play for a prep school. I have heard the name of a few but, according to CaliforniaPreps.com Josh will be attending Findlay Prep in Nevada

Here are a few of Huestis’s stat lines:

Belmont Shore 73, Arizona Dream Team 48

# 8-Josh Huestis, PF – 6/8 fg, 13 reb, 3 blk, 1 stl, 13 pts
1 3 pointer

Belmont Shore 53, Team Odom 49

# 8-Josh Huestis, PF – 3/12 fg, 10 reb, 2 blk, 3 stl, 6 pts
0 3 pointers
2 turnovers

Quincey has also been our personal Josh Huestis on the scene reporter, and has posted these comments on the “CMR’s Josh Huestis is getting Attention” thread on my blog:

update on josh huestis..he has just finshed his second game in the Pangos Summer Sweet 16 @ Cabrillo HS hes playing with the belmont shore aau team..his first game he had 17pts 12 rebs and 3 blks..second game he had about 12pts 11rebs and a couple of blks…on this team he is playing the small foward position and is looking extremly well playing it..The first game he hit 4 three pointers from well beyond the line with 3 coming in a row. His jumper has gotten 10times better as well as his ball handling from working wit a personally trainer all summer in California. By the end up the summer he will no question be a highly ranked player

Josh finished his 3rd in fourth game yesterday. he had 10-13 points in both with 11 rebs and 2 then 3 blks …the Belmont shore aau teams has playing with finished 3-1. Today he played in the pangos all west camp. He finished with 18pts 10rebs 3 blks while scoring on a variety of midrange, drives, and put back dunks. he has left no doubt that he is a small forward on the low, mid, and high major level of college basketball. So far he’s looking like the best player out of the 300 participants at the camp. The people of Montana should be proud of there home grown player

There should be more reports from a few other Internet recruiting sites as the week-end continues. I will try to report on how Montana’s own does.

Josh just finshed up in the reebok summer championships. He started out slow but really picked it up to play pretty well overall. He averaged 13pts 12rebs 2blks a game, as well as leading his team and each game in dunks. He showed the ability to rebound extremely well even against bigger, stronger big men and the ability to keep smaller players in front of him when he is matched up against them. At this point a couple teams are very interested in signing him, with the biggest 2 teams that want him being USC and Stanford

Josh just finished up with the Cream of the Crop tournament in which he played very well. Im not sure his exact stats but the last game against one of the best teams there (Compton Magic) he finished with around 15-17pts 10rebs 2blks on a variety of follow up dunks, three pointers, midrange, power moves near the basket, and freethrows, all while playing the small foward and shooting guard position ( The starting line up consists of a 6’9c,6’8pf,josh,6’8sf/sg,and a pg) next up is the vegas main event in which i will have more accurate stats for the update.

Another update..Josh just finished up the Pangos All West camp, in which some of the top players from the west coast came and played(around 300)..Though he didnt play as well as hes capable of he did play very well and was selected for the top 30 camp all star game in which he played very well(10-12pts 10reb at least 2 blks as well as a vicious put back dunk over 2 people). He has shown more of the small foward skills he will be displaying on the college level(a sweet jumper close to nba 3 point range and a very good defender). Even though he is playing the small foward spot he is still showing a knack for getting double digit rebounds. Next up is the biggest event of the summer. The big time aau tournamanet in las vegas 22-26
