With classes scheduled to start in about a month I thought I would look at the current state of the four D-1programs rosters. The fourth program I want to look at is the Lady Griz program.
This is not the official roster but it but I believe that if one was posted today this is how it would look. The Lady Griz have had most of their 2009-10 been on campus at one time or another this summer. I do not expect any additions or deletions from the roster before the season starts for the scholarship players. I have heard a few rumors that some D-2 schools have made a late run at Lady Griz walk-on Kelsey Hildal but, I am told she is still solid with the Lady Griz.
Roster
Shaunte Nance-Johnson 5-5 point guard senior
Ashley Ferda 5-6 point guard freshman
Stephanie Stender 5-11 guard/forward junior
Sarah Ena 5-11 power forward junior
Jessa Loman Linford, 6-1 forward junior
Alexandra Hurley 5-11 guard/forward freshman
Misty Atkinson 5-10 guard/forward sophomore
Tianna Ware 5-10 guard sophomore
Lauren Beck 6-0 guard/forward senior
Shandra Robison 6-3 center senior
Katie Baker 6-0 forward freshman
Kenzie De Boer 5-11 guard/forward freshman
Alyssa Smith 6-0 forward freshman
Kelsey Hildal 5-4 point guard freshman
Starting Five
Point Guard- Shaunte Nance-Johnson (could be pushed by Ferda)
Shooting Guard- Alexandra Hurley (the griz are gong to need points, Hurley can score)
Small Forward- Lauren Beck (returning starter)
Power Forward- Sarah Ena (returning starter)
Center- Jessa Loman Linford (a player who can do a little bit of every thing)
Back up
Point Guard- Ashley Ferda (if healthy could be a major contributor)
Shooting Guard- Tianna Ware (will battle a lot of depth to win this spot)
Small Forward- Stephanie Stender (will battle a lot of depth to win this spot)
Power Forward- Alyssa Smith (not the flashiest freshman but most D-1 ready)
Center – Shandra Robison (only true center on the team)
Mslacat’s comments: The point guard spot is thin and uninspiring. Nance-Johnson is solid but no where near what the Griz are used to. Ferda has the potential to an outstanding point guard but is coming off a major knee injury and may not be ready for the start of the season. No other point guards. The most interesting battles will be for the shooting guard and small forward. Beck will lock down on spot, but about 5-6 players will battle for the other starting spot and back up roles. Who wants it more. The freshman will push the returnees across the board.
