More Potential Bobcat recruiting targets

I have a few more recruiting targets for the Bobcats this fall

Marcus Colbert 5-11 PG Cobert played two years with current Bobcat Shawn Reid at Post Falls high school in Idaho. Colbert’s father and head coach at Post Falls also has multiple connections with both the Griz and Bobcat programs/coaches. I believe he camped this summer for the Bobcats, but I am not sure, but he did tear it up at the Griz Elite camp this summer and was the best player I saw there (granted I only saw a a few games). It is said that the Griz offered Colbert at their camp.  Colbert is a very explosive play maker who can create his own shot or those of his team mates. Athletic and quick is most likely the leading candidate for the Idaho 5A player of the year. Averaged 16 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 4.9 apg last season. I believe the Bobcat coaches offered him this past Friday or Saturday. In addition to Montana State I have heard that San Jose State and Montana have offered Colbert at one point or another while Washington State Idaho and Baylor have been showing interest for quite some time.

Potential Bobcat recruiting targets

By request

Most of what I am posting I have posted on my twitter page over the past 4-6 weeks with and is an update on some rumored Bobcat recruit targets.

Ty Egbert 6-9 pf/C Lake Roosevelt high school in Washington. Is said to have offers from Boise State, Idaho, Nevada, and Washington State. Montana and Montana State. Has that elusive quality coaches love right now: length (meaning he has long arms and can play bigger than his height) better athlete than many expect and runs the floor well. Has official visits scheduled for Boise State, on Sept 23rd and Montana State for October 1st. Don’t be surprised if Montana schedules an official visit the day before or after his Montana State visit. ESPN rating 88

Sekou Wiggs 6-3 SG O’Dea high school in Washington state, athletic scorer. Cal Irvine, Cal Poly, Idaho, Portland St. and San Francisco have offered, UC Davis is trying to get him down for an official visit. I hear both Montana and Montana State have been recruiting and depending on who you talk to depends which school is more serious. I have been told he will take an official to “one of the Montana schools” but I am not sure which one. ESPN rating 88

Jalen Ward 5-10 PG O’Dea high school in Washington state, Another kid who helped his stock this summer. A pass first point guard but has deep range, athletic and fast. Sounds like a Casey Trujeque type player. His size (5-10 might be generous), or lack there-of is the major question mark on him. Montana St., Boise State, Washington St. and Cal St. Santa Barbara are all showing a lot of interest right now. MSU has been recruiting him the longest I am told.

Potential Griz recruiting targets

By request

Most of what I am posting I have posted on my twitter page over the past 4-6 weeks with and is an update on some rumored Griz recruit targets. The first player I thought should be of interest to you guys.

Matt Staudacher 6-0 PG Lake Washington high school in Washington, Yes I do believe he is the brother of former Griz, Ryan Staudacher. Has been gaining a lot of interest this summer and fall. He has proven over the summer he can play the point for a very talented AAU team and his stock has risen. Described as a “heady point guard with deep shot” Has interest from Denver, Idaho St., Montana, Penn, and Portland St, but I do not believe any offers yet. ESPN rating NA

Sekou Wiggs 6-3 SG O’Dea high school, athletic scorer.

Mitch Brewe 6-8 PF/C Seattle Prep high school in Washington, Big time scorer (23 ppg) and rebounder (just under 10) a good Seattle area team. A hustle guy but not overly athletic. Army, Montana, Drake, UC Santa Barbara have all offered and St Mary’s showing a lot of interest. ESPN rating 88

Huse finishes his 2011 recruiting class

I have heard that Brad Huse’s Montana State basketball team has finally finished its 2011 recruiting class with the signing ofMichaelDisonofDekaneyhigh school located in Spring Texas (in the Houston area).Disonis a 5-10 (some times listed at 5-11) point guard who averaged 18 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals a game while shooting 44% from the field, 39% from 3 point range and 79% from the charity strip.

Denaney high school finished was a power in the Houston basketball scene last season posting a perfect 14-0 record in league play and a 31-6 overall record. For his effortsDisonwas named Co-District Most Valuable Player an honor he shared with teammate junior Jalen Hughes.

On Mike DisonFacebook fan page he has the following 2011 awards and accomplishments listed.

Bobcats to sign Christian Moon

I have heard that Montana State head coach Brad Huse has landed his fifth JC recruit of the this week end when Christian Moon of Henry Ford CC college committed to the Bobcats after an official visit this weekend.Moon has played the past two seasons with Bobcat fall signee Jamie Stewart, and I think this connection played a big part in his committing to the Bobcat program. While Moon does not quite come with the post season awards that the other three JC guards in the 2011 recruiting class, he does have very impressive distinction that made the Bobcat coaching staff very interested in him.Moon lead the NJCAA in three point shooting with a remarkable 52% (52 of 99 shots) from beyond the three point arc.

Moon is a 6-2 shooting guard who averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 steals, 54% fg (on a total 259 shot attempts) and 74% FT. While Moon is a prolific and deep three point shooter he not a one dimensional player that many three point specialist in the Big Sky are. He uses his deep range to set up his mid range game, and is athletic enough that he is a very good rebounder from the guard spot.

Moon also held offers from Idaho State and Southern Utah.

Montana State signs Xavier Johnson-Blount

I have heard from Brett Swanson at Jucojunction.com that Brad Huse and his coaching staff have signed their first recruit (that I know of) of the spring signing period, and their second JC All American for 2011. The newest Bobcat is Xavier Johnson-Blount from Cochise Junior College in Arizona. Johnson-Bount played his high school ball at First Colonial high school in Norfolk Virginia. Cochise plays in the same conference that produced former Bobcat starting guard Will Bynum a few years back.

This past year at Cochise JC, Johnson-Blount averaged 22 points, and 5 rebounds while shooting 45% from the field, 39% from 3 point range, and 68% from the free-throw line. For his efforts he was named first team all conference, First team All Region 1 as well as All American. Cochise finished the season with a 22 wins on 11 loses. They won the region 1 tourney and championship but were eliminated at the district tourney by eventual NJCAA D1 champion Southern Idaho. Three of their 4 sophomore players have or are expected sign with D-1 school, and the forth with possibly a D-2/Naia school.

In high school Johnson-Blount averaged 24 points, 7 rebounds 2 assists, 2 steals while shooting 49% from the field, 32% from three point range and 68% from the free-throw line.

Signing Day: The Griz

Today is the start of the spring signing period that will last until mid May. In looking at the recruiting prospects of the D-1 basketball programs in the State of Montana the Griz and Lady Griz recruiting is far more interesting than there counter parts at Montana State. We know Montana States men’s program will sign three recruits and the Women almost assuredly will not. The Griz though I am not sure what they are up to.

Lady Griz

At the end of the November signing period Selvig state he was done recruiting with the single signing of Haley Vining of CMR high school in Great Falls. That seems to have changed. The lady Griz have three seniors, plus Misty Atkinson will finish up her degree and not return for her senior year. Additionally I have heard that Ferda may retire from basketball leaving Selvig with 4 open scholarships for 2011-12. With only one senior next year I had heard that Selvig wanted to keep a few scholarships open this year so he could sign some players from an outstanding class in Montana and Washington, but I do not know if he can hold 4 open and have only 11 active player going into next year.

I have heard the lady Griz had a JC player in for a campus visit a few weeks back, but Selvig did not like the fit. Additionally one of the assistants wanted to bring in a girl from Idaho but Selvig was not sure. I am told Selvig is being very picky this spring looking for just the right player and if he does not find that player than so be it. Last fall the Lady Griz seemed to be looking for a true center (6-4 ish), but this spring seem to be looking more at big players (6-1-ish types) that can play multiple positions and are a little more athletic.
