While Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle and assistant Freddie Owens were checking out Nick Arenz of Onalaska high school last week they also decided to also check out his teammate Matt Thomas. Thomas is a 6-0-ish (I have seen him listed any where from 5-9 to 6-1) sophomore guard who has established himself as on of the top Wisconsin prospect in the 2013 class.
Thomas, as a true freshman averaged 10 points a game, with quite a few scoring out puts of over 20 points.
Here is an evaluation from Antonio Curro of NY2LASPORTS.com from just last month.
2013 sharpshooting guard Matt Thomas of Onalaska has started to see interest pick up in recent weeks. Regarded as one of the top 2013 prospects in the state of Wisconsin, Thomas is getting interest from South Dakota State and Northern Iowa according to his travel team coach, Jason Jesperson.
Thomas plays for the Wisconsin Playmakers during the grassroots travel season.
Thomas is a little bit of a tweener right now, a shooting guard in a point guard’s body. He does have a lot of maturing yet to do physically and basketball wise so it is a little early to label him a shooting or point guard. Time will tell.
Currently Wisconsin, Army, Creighton, Montana, Northern Iowa and Butler are keeping their eye on him but many more are starting to get on board.
