Griz Recruit: Hameed Ali

Yesterday I wrote a post declaring to all that the Montana Grizzly are primarily looking to sign a small forward with their single scholarship this year. First thing I write about today is that the Griz are recruiting a point guard. What are you going to do!

The player that I have heard the Grizzlies are recruiting is Hameed Ali of San Leandro
high school in Northern California. Ali is a 6-2 (possibly 6-3) guard who I have seen listed as both a shooting and point guard prospect, but most feel he will play the point in college.

Hameed Ali averaged 11 points, 6 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals while shooting 48% from the field, 35 % from three point range and 75% from the free throw line. He is listed on numerous rankings at between 10 to 13th best basketball prospects in Northern California. Greg Hicks of Scout.com also ranks Hameed Ali as one of the top 10 (10th) point guards on the west coast.

Here are a few short evaluations and comments from a variety of sources.

A couple comments from different events from Kevin McCarthy of NorCalPreps.com and about a dozen other websites and blogs.

Hameed Ali is so smart on the court — we haven’t seen a kid his age with as high a basketball IQ as him. We have to play him in crunch time because we know he will do the right thing

Hameed Ali, 6-foot-2, 160, San Leandro High, 2011: a combo guard who can score and has a great feel for the game, he can score in bunches and also run a team

Hameed Ali, San Leandro (San Leandro, CA) 6’2 PG

Had a strong showing in the Clash. Knocked down a couple outside shots and showed improved athleticism. Ran the show well and finished with a game-high 8 assists to go with his 7 points. Solid low to mid major prospect.

Hameed Ali 6-foot-2 PG San Leandro (2011): Ali was an effective distributor on Sunday and also is expanding his range to make defenses respect his offense. He showed good range on a three pointer in the first half, but needs to continue develop his scoring game as a senior.

I am told Ali has a 3.20 GPA and a 1490 SAT score and has already been qualified by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Currently California Riverside, Columbia, Hartford, Montana, Portland, Portland State, Southern Utah and Weber State are showing a lot of interest, but I do not know if he has any offers as of yet.
