Bobcat recruiting: Corey Wickware

I have heard that the Montana State Bobcat coaches are recruiting Corey Wickware from Wabash Valley Junior College in Illinois. Wickware is a 5-10, 175 pound point guard who is just finishing up his sophomore year. He is originally from Southport high school in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he was an all conference player.

This past season he really has surprised some folks by averaging 12 points, 2 rebounds and 3 assists while averaging a sizzling 51% from the field, 41% beyond the three point arc and 86% from the charity line for Wabash Valley. The previous season he was a seldom used back up player. This season he has earned the following awards MVP of the Circle City Classic, All County Team, All Conference, 1000 point club, East-West All Star, Top 40 workout, Team MVP.

Wabash Valley is loaded D-1 prospects with 6 players who average double digit points. So far players Desmond Holloway (Coastal Carolina), Omar Sanders (South Carolina State) Cornelius Chatt (SIU-Edwardsville), Brandon Dunson (Arizona State), and Josh Lockett (Southeastern Louisiana) have committed or signed with college programs and additionally Chris Britt, and Brandon McGeeare are also thought to sign with college.

Wickware’s strength is his speed, athleticism and his competiveness. As a high school player the main knock on him was his lack of mid range and deep shooting range. If you look at his scoring percentage above it appears that that is no longer of an issue as his shooting is now one of his strengths. He plays the point guard spot in Wabash but is not a true point, but more of a scoring point guard. I think his height is an issue for some larger schools but those smallish guards have found a place in the Big Sky over the past 3-4 year.

Here is an eval. from MidStatesHoops.com from a few months ago

Wickware is a solid point guard. He handles it well and is good at getting to the rim where he can both dish and finish. He’s quick off the bounce and good at creating contact while driving to the basket. Corey is a lights out three point shooter when set and also has quick hands defensively.

In addition to Montana State I hear Austin Peay, Miami-Ohio, North Carolina A&T, and SIU-Edwardsville are showing the most interest but more schools could be looking to get involved. SIU-Edwardsville has offered, but I do not know of the others.
