Griz recruit: Stefan Buratto

I have heard that Wayne Tinkle and his staff are recruiting Stefan Buratto from Sandpoint Idaho. Buratto is a 6-3 180 pound shooting guard who is burning up the net in Northern Idaho.

Buratto is an explosive scorer who has deep range but also has a very good intermediate game. Originally from Spokane Washington he joined the Sandpoint high school team during his junior year where he averaged 15 points a game. This season though he has exploded on the scene and I believe leads the entire State in scoring with a 24 point a game average. I do not have the official stats but I believe he also averaged 8 rebounds and 4 assists a game, but he is primarily known as a scorer.

Sandpoint has had a tough season this year currently with a 6-15 season as a result Buratto has double and triple team coverage as teams have tried to stop him, still he managed to dominate the score board, including two games where he has scored 40 or more points. With the play-offs though underway Sandpoint is the one team all the high ranked teams fear.

Buratto plays in the same conference as future Bobcat Shawn Reid (Post Falls high school). While Burrato won the head to head battle with Reid – 38 pts ave. vrs 19 pts ave, – Post Falls won the head to head battle with two victories (94-75 and 79-72).

The main concern that is hurting his recruitment, besides being hidden in Sand Point Idaho is concern about his quickness and the ability to defend at the D-1 level, still I have been told he compares quite well to former Griz Mike Warhank and/or Kevin Crizwell. It should be noted though both of those players had to walk-on at UM before winning a scholarship and going on to become All Big Sky players.

Currently Montana is the only D-1 school that I know is recruiting him. He also is getting attention from Carroll College, and North Idaho College while and Columbia Basin Community College remains his sole offer at this point.

I like to have 1-2 of these players on a team that has no conscience when it comes to scoring. The right kid can bring a dynamic energy/ chemistry to a team, and a player who can get you a score when you need one. This could be a great kid to take a chance on. But what do I know.

This last weekend Stefan scored 42 points in the Idaho North-South All Star game, hitting 9-13 three point attempts, enroute to winning the Co-MVP award in a loss to the South All-Stars. I thought I had seen it all out of my son, but this topped it all. So, I believe his quickness and explosiveness are underrated, especially after watching this recent display and tapes of his last two district games against Lakeland High School. While Lakeland is no power, at times Stefan seemed to explode into a higher gear, allowing him to do whatever he wanted (offensively and defensively). That and unlike many other athletes of his caliber, Stefan hasn’t had any personal explosion training classes. He really can be in much better shape in the future with a proper weight training coach. That and his offensive effort has been the main obstacle to a more concerted defensive effort; he is just plain tired while running around trying to shake double teams.
