The Griz lose one to … Duke



Again normally I do not do stories on players who the Cat’s and Griz lose out to but as a Montana State and North Carolina fan, this one was real interesting to me, on a lot of levels. I thought I would pass it along.

A few months ago Southern Idaho junior college player, Carrick Felix’s top 3 schools were Idaho, Montana and Kent State. Felix was coming off a redshirt year for SIU, and was getting some D-1 attention, but mostly at the low-major level. Things have changed since then.

The list of schools Felix has been receiving attention from, since the beginning of the year includes Arizona State, West Virginia, Marquette, Clemson and ACC power Duke. Recently Duke offered Felix and he snatched up the offer.

Felix is a 6-6 small forward who is averaging 14.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 blocks a game that will have three years of D-1 eligibility starting next year.

Felix’s rise from mediocrity to the highest level of D-1 basketball in the span of less than a few months is one of the most remarkable things I have ever seen in D-1 basketball in the last 20 year. He also, though, represents the first junior college recruit Duke coach Mike Krzyzewksi have recruited let alone sign offered and signed, in his thirty years as the Blue Devils. The move has shocked quite a few D-1 basketball fans (me included) that this may represent a major shift in what was at one time considered a “freshman only” program. I wonder how much the one and done superstar player situation has affected the Duke recruiting philosophy?

    Felix has not committed to Duke, and definitely has not signed since the late signing period doesn’t begin until April. Felix is still open, but leaning heavily toward Duke. He’ll take a visit to Arizona State after the season.

      My Bad. Hoopscooponline.com was reporting that he had committed, and that is what I was basing the commitment on. I stand corrected.
