Bobcats recruit: Danny Lawhorn

This one took some research.

I had heard a while back that one of the Montana schools (as many people out side of the state likes to refer MSU and UM) was recruiting Danny Lawhorn out of the state of Connecticut. On face value it looked a little dubious, because Connecticut is not in either schools typical recruiting stomping grounds, but with kids playing so much AAU ball and traveling it seemed plausible that that an assistant coach may have seen him at a tournament and connected with him. While I had some indication that it was possibly Montana who was looking at him, I do have it confirmed that it is indeed Montana State who is recruiting him.

Tell me though, pick the basketball program that looks a little out of place in Lawhorn’s current list of favorites: Connecticut, Providence, Georgia Southern, Baylor, UCLA, Nevada, Houston, Rutgers, Montana State and DePaul. I know I had to scratch my head a little when I was told (by multiple sources) the schools who were said to be on his short list, but never the less Montana State is that is making a strong play for his services.

The other thing that confused me about his recruitment was that he has been rumored to be committed at one point or another the past year to two different schools. This summer Boston College offered Lawhorn and he promptly committed to them, but over the course of this fall it appeared to Lawhorn, that BC was loosing some interest in him and they went their separate ways. Then a couple weeks ago, a couple of his social networking sites, announced that he had committed to Connecticut, but this turned out to be a hoax by someone who had hacked onto his sites. As of now it appears that he is still in non-committed.

Here is what I know about Mr. Lawhorn. Lawhorn is a senior point guard who is 5-10 to 6-0 point guard for South Kent School high school near Hartford Connecticut. South Kent School is a private prep school that has (recruited?) a very good basketball team with multiple D-1 prospects from through out the northeast. Lawhorn transferred to South Kent School after attending Hartford Public high school his junior and sophomore year. As a junior at Hartford Public he average 19.0 points and 5.0 assists a game. I have not found his official stats this year at South Kent but I believe he is averaging around 13 points and 5 assists for them.

ESPN gives Lawhorn 78 rating and labels him as the # 137 point guard in the country this year while Scout.com and Rivals give him a 2-3 star rating. Here are some evaluations of Lawhorn

ESPN Evaluation

Danny Lawhorn

October, 2009: A point guard with exceptional speed and quickness, Lawhorn is capable of making some special plays off the dribble, especially in the open floor. However, consistency and efficiency have been Lawhorn’s biggest problems, in addition to his inability to ever add any muscle to his frame.

ESPN.com Recruiting Coordinator Antonio Williams

Danny’s speed and lightning quickness, is his biggest attribute.

“Lawhorn uses his quickness very effectively by getting into the paint and causing problems for opposing defenses,” Williams offered. “His quickness makes him an ideal fit for the fast break. Lawhorn also gives perimeter defenders fits by deftly changing speeds off the dribble which keeps defenders guessing and wears them out with his impressive speed.”

“He also possesses very good passing skills and vision which allows him to spot open teammates on the break or in traffic when Lawhorn gets into the teeth of the defense,”
“For the next level, Lawhorn will have to improve his touch, range, and consistency from the perimeter,”

NBE Basketball

Danny Lawhorn, 2010, South Kent Prep: An absolute defensive menace, the former Boston College verbal commit jumpstarted many of South Kent’s fastbreaks with his steals and deflections. He plays the passing lanes very well and also caused two five-second calls on his opponent. Lawhorn does need to improve his decision-making and ability to run a fast break; he made several questionable choices after getting steals.

Connecticut prep basketball

Danny Lawhorn, South Kent – He’s obviously learned a lot about how to play the point and run a team the right way in the last few months. .Hartford native Danny Lawhorn also played an impressive game and is clearly learning a lot under head coach Kelvin Jefferson. Lawhorn used his wheels to make plays defensively, got into the lane with his dribble, and found people with his passing to finish with 15 points, 6 assists and 3 steals.

Like I mentioned above the Bobcats is the little guy among Connecticut, Providence, Georgia Southern, Baylor, UCLA, Nevada, Houston, Rutgers, and DePaul, but the coaches have done a really good in selling him on the program and they are getting a serious group. Not all of these schools have offered yet and but the Bobcats have and his stock is rising. As it has been described to me with the UCLA and Connecticut’s it is figured that he will need to redshirt and start contributing by his sophomore year.. For the Bobcats though he could be an impact player as a true freshman. The Bobcats rarely (if any) win against a UCLA/Connecticut so it is a long shot.
