The week of 12-07-09 in Review

Ok a little late but I am back.

This past week was typical pre-conference play with the four programs playing a wide variety of programs from upper end D-1 schools to low end D-2/NAIA schools. No one can claim a clean sweep of the week as they all took their lumps, and most posted blow out victories against inferior talent.

I am going to give the week to the Montana Griz men who played two D-1 programs who belong to conference that are considered a step up from the Big Sky. Both games were on the road and the Griz went 1-1 but they were in the game they lost up until the end.

Griz Men: The Grizzly Men went into last week knowing they would be with out their #2 guy and main interior force Brian Qvale. This would be a challenge under most conditions but on the road against Loyola Marymount (West Coast Conference) and Colorado State (Mountain West Conference) it did not look to rosy. The Griz came away with a win at LMU, and drop a 1 point decision at CSU. While two wins would have been better than on their performance this week end is the type of thing that will only, build confidence and could be a sign of things to come.

Bobcat Men:
Again this was a week end where the Bobcats lost the game they were suppose to – top 25 Memphis – and won the games they were suppose to – a 40 point shellacking of North Mexico school of cosmetology. In the end the Cats got exposed team speed at a level they, most likely will never see again this season , and a lot of young players got to see shine in front of the home crowd. I do not see much more from this week.

Lady Griz: The Lady Griz actually played one more game this week that I was expecting and went 2-1 over all. They took out NAIA Western Montana in their first game, and looked terrible in the first half, before burying UM-W in the second half. Against Gonzaga they dropped a 27 point decision in Spokane and I was starting to worry about the Lady Griz prospects for the coming conference season. Their last game of the week though the man handled Idaho at home for a 24 point victory, and for the first time this season I saw glimpses of the Lady Griz team that Big Sky conference observers have some to expect. They still though have a lot to prove before conference starts.

Bobcat Women: The Bobcat women took it on the chin this past week dropping two games to Boise State (on the road) and Washington State (at home). The Bobcats were very much in both of these games up until the very end, but could not pull out the win at the end. Both of these schools are very good step up games for the Bobcats, but still they are going to need to learn how to win these close games if they hope to challenge for the league title.
