I have heard that the University of Montana head coach Wayne Tinkle and his staff is recruiting Malachi Roberts from Eastmont high school in Wenatchee, Washington. Robert is a 6-4 athlete who plays all three perimeter positions for Wenatchee.
Robert is an explosive athlete a quick first step, and a tremendous leaping ability. He has long arms that make him a good defender. He played the point guard spot last year but has been moved to the wing spot to take advantage of his scoring abilities this year. Going through a growing spurt also played in his coach’s decision to move to the wing.
Robert averaged 17 points a game last season and was named Honorable mention all conference Cascade Division team. This year in his first two games he has averaged 24 points a game. He incidentally plays in the same conference with Griz signee Michael Weisner.
Joel Francisco of ESPN.com had the following evaluation of Roberts from last spring.
One of the top sleepers in camp was 6-1 junior Malachi Roberts (Wenatchee, Wash./ Eastmont). He didn’t make any of the All-Star games, but he demonstrated that he has the skills and feel to become a Division 1 comb-guard in the near future.
This is a little older from 2008 but here is what Greg Hicks of Scout.com had to say.
Malachi Roberts, 6-2 PG East Wenatchee (Wash.) Eastmont. Good-looking young guard with a nice frame and fairly athletic. Made good decisions and looks to be pretty skilled
Along with Montana I hear Columbia, Portland, Portland State, Washington, Weber State, and Yale are showing an interest in Roberts, but I do not think he has any offers as of yet.
