UM’s Anthony Johnson: Big Sky player of the week


In what was a complete non-surprise The University of Montana Grizzly Anthony Johnson was named Big Sky men’s Player of the Week in the first week of NCAA regular season competition. After averaging 22.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game to earn tourney MVP honors of the Grizzly’s season opening tourney, it was hard to imagine it going t anyone else. Montana’s Anthony Johnson has been selected as the first Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week of the 2009-10 season after leading the Grizzlies to the tournament title at the Karl Tyler Chevrolet Grizzly Basketball Tournament.

Johnson, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound senior guard from Tacoma, Wash., averaged 22.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game to earn tourney MVP honors. He led the Grizzlies to victories over North Dakota, Boise State and Loyola-Marymount.

The 2008-09 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year scored 20 points with six assists and four rebounds as UM opened the tournament with a 61-37 victory over North Dakota.

Johnson scored 25 points with five rebounds and four assists in a 95-82 victory over Boise State on Saturday. Johnson, who led the Big Sky in free-throw shooting as a junior, made all 14 of his free throws against the Broncos.

Johnson netted 22 points with three assists and three rebounds in a 64-63 victory over Loyola-Marymount on Sunday. Johnson went 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-poitn range. Johnson made a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to give the Grizzlies’ a 64-60 lead.

For the week, Johnson shot .528 percent form the field, .538 percent from 3-point range and .917 percent from the free-throw line. He’ll enter Montana’s next game having made 20 consecutive free throws.

Yahosh Bonner, G, NC: Averaged 8.7 points and 3 steals per game in three wins.
Jamie Jones, F, PSU: Averaged 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in three losses.
John Dickson, G/F, SAC: Averaged 11.3 points per game in three losses.
Damian Lilalrd, G, WSU: Scored 20 points in a loss.
