Injuries / Player losses

band-aid-shoes

With D-1 Basketball about to get fully underway injuries and player losses seem to be mounting up at both Montana and Montana State. In today’s Missoulain they out lined the Griz men’s injury situation, but they are not the only program who has been hit by the loss of available players. Injuries and player defections hit the men’s programs a lot harder than their women counterparts because of the men’s scholarship limit of 13 compared with 15 for the women’s programs. The men’s program scholarship limit was 15 some 10-15 years ago but was reduced by the NCAA athletic directors as a cost saving measure. Additionally unlike most other sports Basketball coaches can not spit scholarship. If an athlete is given a full scholarship or only a partial it still counts as 1 scholarship towards the limit.

On a similar note the flue has also had a big impact on the preseason practices for the programs. From what I have heard it has particularly hit the Montana State programs pretty hard. With so many player days missed to the flue most programs have not been able to implement all the schemes yet that they had hoped to before the start of game.

Here is what I know of affecting the four programs. These do not include previous injuries that could be reinjured nor typical minor bumps and bruises.

Montana State men:

Montana State entered the year with 13 scholarship players and three walk-ons for a total of 16 players on the roster.

Player losses:

Marc Bourgault – The true freshman left the team when he fell a ½ core credit shy of qualifying by the NCAA clearing house.
Larry Swann – Is suspended indefinitely by Huse
Colt Idol – The true freshman, is being redshirt with a knee injury, but he may have redshirted anyway.
Michel Swita – Swita like a lot of European transfer players this year has not yet received official ruling from the NCAA clearinghouse. He is expected to get clearance but no one knows when.

Available players:
Scholarship Players: 10
Walk-ons: 2

Montana men:

Montana entered the year with 13 scholarship players and one walk-on for a total of 14 players on the roster.

Player losses:

Thurman Woods – The true freshman left the team when it appeared he might not clear the NCAA clearing house.
Vassy Banny – Is recovering from a MCL injury out at least a month.
Derek Selvig – The sophomore re-injured his troublesome foot. Is out at least a month.
Eric Hutchison – The true freshman is out indefinitely with a foot injury. May have redshirted anyway.
Michael Taylor – The Junior will miss the November 6th exhibition game with a shoulder injury, but is expected back by the start of the season.

Available players as of today:
Scholarship Players: 8 players
Walk-ons: 1

Montana State Women:

Montana State entered the year with 13 scholarship players when underclassmen Rachel Pauli and Jenny Heringer decided to hang-up their sneakers. They have no walk-ons this year.

Player losses

Kate Bussey – The retuning freshman of the year sat out last Sunday’s game against MSU Billings with a reported concussion, but is expected back by the start of the official season.

Available players as of today:
Scholarship Players: 12

Lady Griz:

Montana entered the season with only 13 of their scholarships filled, additionally they also had one walk-on, for a total of 14 players.

Player losses

Katie Baker – I have heard that true freshman and poetical starter has been out with an undisclosed injury, but is expected back by the official season start.

Available players as of today:
Scholarship Players: 12 players
Walk-ons: 1
