Secret Scrimmages

shhhThis week a large number of D-1 schools will be participating in “Secret Scrimmage” as they are know, against other D-1 schools. One of these schools is Montana as they travel to Spokane this Friday (or Saturday depending on who you ask) to play Washington State in a scrimmage. While the scrimmages are supposed to be a secret, Fox Sports has published a list of schools, games and dates that they are aware of here.

I am not sure about the exact rules but I believe NCAA rules prohibit coaches from talking about the scrimmages, no fans can be in attendance and no official stats are to be published. I think this type of thing is very helpful for the coaches to get a gauge as to where there team are at, but lets face it they are really not that secret.

As a matter of fact I will be curious to see who quickly it takes for the unofficial stats to leak out.

Here is the list that Fox Sports has put out.

i wonder if this just doesn’t portend a lengthening college basketball season. remember when college basketball started december one, or major league baseball was over the first week of october, or a college football schedule was ten games? there’s big money now in college athletics, and with a certain level of fixed costs–scholarships, arena maintenance, coach and staffing salaries–it makes sense to increase the revenue side of the ledger. basketball practise now starts october 15, but i predict that will soon be when the basketball schedule begins, period.
