Odds and ends: 9-15-09

mslacatlogoAnother week and another odds and ends post.

  • I have heard that Thurmond Woods, who signed with the Grizzly program last November, will now be attending Santa Ana junior college in California this fall. It sounds like he will need to attend the JC for two years to get his D-1 eligibility, but I am not sure about that. Woods is originally from Dominguez high school in California, and was on the Montana campus this summer. From what I saw of him this summer I thought he had the chance to make an impact on the Griz this year as a true freshman.

  • I did a couple posts on 7-1 forward / center Ben Mills from Wisconsin. Mills has been recruited by both Weber State and Montana State for close to 2 years, but as I understand it Montana offered Mills last July. About the time Montana State started recruiting him he was a 6-6 combo forward, and now he is projected to possibly top out at the 7-2 range. He definitely has the skills to play both facing or with his back to the basket, and has decent range on his shot. He is though rail thin and in some ways his growth has hurt his recruitment in that skill wise he really is more suited to play the forward spot but he just keeps growing. In some ways I think of him like the Griz Derek Selvig who may have been better suited if he stopped growing around the 6-9 to 6-10 range.
  • I have heard that the Griz are trying to get a Trayvonn Wright into Missoula for an official visit in October.vogal
  • Alex Vogal, a 5-11 point guard from Washington high school in Washington Iowa recently mentioned Montana State as one of the schools he currently is most interested in. Last season Vogal averaged close to 18 points a game and shot 46% from the field. Vogel was an honorable mention All-State by the Iowa Newspaper Association this past season. I know the Cats started recruiting Vogal close to 12-18 months ago, but I did not think they were still involved

Here are some quotes from IowaPreps.com article.

“The main schools are probably still Montana State, SIU-E, UNI, Upper Iowa a lot, and all of the Division III schools in Iowa like Coe, Loras, Buena Vista, and those schools

“I’ve gotten calls about every single night from coaches in the Iowa Conference. There have also been some emails with Montana State and Utah State. I also just got one from Boise State wanting my highlight tape.”taylor

  • About a week or two ago I did a post about Bobcat 2011 basketball recruit Stevie Taylor. In that post I really took the attitude that the Bobcats were recruiting him early but he may end up rising above the level of the Bobcats. Recently though RedHawkInsider.com (part of the Scout.com network) had an interview with Taylor and he had some interesting comments about his short list. His short list is the six schools who have so far offered him. Of the six schools who have offered him the list includes, Akron, George Mason, James Madison, Miami-OH, Montana State, and Ohio University. Of that list Miami, Akron, and Ohio are his current favorites. In the article he also goes on to indicate he will not be considering any other schools, out side these six. That is an interesting statement given that he currently is a junior and two years away from being a college player. A lot can happen in two years.huestis
  • And finally what would be an odds and ends post with out mentioning Josh Huestis. The internet has been abuzz this week end with talk about Huestis. From talk of a possible offer from Georgetown, to general discussion on various college basketball boards as to whether their school should sign him.

Additionally Northstar Basketball Blog (admittedly the first time I have heard of this Blog) had an interview with Josh and his recruitment. Here is an excerpt / quote from the article.

Thus far Huestis has taken an official visit to USC and has setup official visits to Stanford, Gonzaga, and Harvard. “After the in-home visits I’ll decide if I need all those or if I need a fifth one.” Regarding in-home visits, Josh has plans for Harvard, Yale, Colorado, Oregon State, USC, Stanford, and Rice to make the trip to him. Huestis, who has an impressive 3.96 GPA, says his “tops are Oregon State, USC, Stanford, and Gonzaga in no order.” I inquired whether the situation with Tim Floyd, OJ Mayo, and possible punishments for the Southern Cal program will affect him, and he responded, “No, the punishments that are being given don’t affect me. They may not be able to go to the NCAA Tournament this year only [and they] may lose a couple scholarships, but not mine.” When will Huestis take his name off the board, and will we all find out when he trims his list? “I plan on committing before this season, but that could change, and after these in-home visits I’m sure I’ll be able to narrow it down to at most five.”

Northstar Basketball Blog is a free Blog so checkout the entire article here, there is some good information there.
