Odds and ends: 9-8-09

I am back and here we go.huestis5

  • CMR’s Josh Huestis took his first official visit this past week-end with more planned in the following weeks. I have been hearing conflicting reports, but it is possible that Harvard has been dropped from his visit. Two new schools I have heard have jumped into the mix seriously. The first is no big surprise to me and that is Mike Montgomery’s U. of California. Given Montgomery’s connections to the state I am only surprised it took so long. The one that surprised me is Georgetown. Not that he would not be a good fit for the Big East School, but more that they just sprung out of nowhere. Keep your eye’s peeled on California, Stanford, USC, and Georgetown.
  • Speaking of official visits, IowaPreps.com (part of the Rivals.com network) is reporting that jokDau Jok a 6-3 shooting guard from Des Moines, Iowa will be taking an official visit to Montana on October 9-11th.  I hear, Jok  attended the Griz basketball camp this July.  Here is what Jok had to say about his visits so far.

“Right now, I have three officials setup. On the 19th of September, I’m going to North Dakota. The following week of the 26th, I am going to Pennsylvania. On October 9-11 I am going to Montana. That is what I have right now.”

“Not really. I don’t want to judge any yet until I go to their campus and see what they are about. I want to know about their academics, the basketball team, where I’d live, and what help I’d get with academics. I know all that stuff with SIU-E. I’m clear with them and I know everything about them. I know what they have to offer with academics.”

  • HawgSports.com (part of the Rivals.com network) is reporting that Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino is really making a late push to get an official visit from Helena Capitals Matt Miller. Despite this Miller’s top five (and trip official worthy) are Arizona State, Arkansas, Boise State, Oregon State and Stanford. Arkansas though is still trying to bump one of those, and given Petrino’s connections to Helena and the Miller family it might not be out of the question.

Here is a quote from Miller:

“When Coach Petrino called me and after we talked for awhile out of nowhere he said ‘we would like to offer you a scholarship,'” Miller said. “I was shocked. That’s my first SEC offer and the SEC speaks for itself.”trayvonn

  • Scout.com reported last week that the Grizzlies have offered Trayvonn Wright from West high school in Waterloo, Iowa. The Bobcats have also been recruiting Wright since last spring. Wright is a 6-7 190 pound forward with a 7-0 wing span you can find more info on Wright HERE. Wright holds offers from Southern Illinois, Miami-OH, North Dakota State, Montana, Montana State, and Virginia Commonwealth, with North Dakota State, Southern Illinois, and Miami-OH as his favorites.

Wright also was the top high jumper in Iowa last year, with a PR of 6-10.

I am not sure if I have any particularly insightful info, but I really think if Gonzaga offers they jump to the top of the pile. problem is that Gonzaga might have only 1-2 scholarships to offer and they could be looking at other positions. Past that, despite USC on the verge of being put on probation by the NCAA they really seem to be doing pretty well and i think Huestis has amily in Southern California. I really like Stanford they offer a lot every thing. The Stanford of the west, a history of being a Pac-10 power, and a GREAT campus. I think California is a real dark horse. never count Montgomery out, of all of the schools listed above he is the most dynamic and best recruiter. Georgetown, stills have me scratching my head, but if they are truely interested Thompson and Georgetown are pretty impressive.

But in the end I think he will sign with Montana State …… Quit laughing it could happen!

It looks like USC just got a commitment from a 6’6″ SF, Garrett Jackson, from out of Portland, Oregon. I wonder if this might have an impact on Huestis’ plans…

If you don’t mind me asking, how would you handicap Huestis’ recruitment? Where do you think he ends up? Cal, USC, Stanford, and Georgetown are all great academic schools, so he can’t go wrong in that department.
