Lexie Nelson Commits to the Lady Griz

NelsonI have heard that Butte high school shooting guard Lexie Nelson has committed to the Robin Selvig’s Lady Griz program. The 5-6 Nelson averaged 22 points, 2 assists a game last season while shooting over 50% from the field, 44 % from beyond the 3 point arc, and 82% from the charity stripe. She was named first team all conference as well as All State last year, as well as being named to the Great Falls tribune Super State basketball team.

The knock on Nelson was that she was a little small for the shooting guard spot, but he aggressiveness the ability to score from anywhere on the court convinced both Montana and Montana State to offer her last winter, and pursued her though out the spring and Summer.

Nelson is the fourth high school player to commit to the Griz this summer, and despite what I said the other day THIS will leave Selvig with one scholarship left to offer, and I would bet he will wait on Sullivan before filling it.

Now you may remember me last month pontificating on what I felt Lady Griz would do with this recruiting class, if not you can see it here. Well let’s face it, I really blew it! Still though I am scratching my head. With the commitment of Nelson the Griz have now three shooting guards that they will sign this fall. The 2010-11 lady Griz team will feature a great stable of guard / forwards featuring Hurley, De Boer, Hill, Nelson, and Cole who will all be either freshman or sophomores. Just for good measure you will also be able to add junior and seniors Stender, Atkinson, and Ware to the guard / forward list. On the other hand, the Griz will have only one true point guard on their scholarship roster.

Selvig has always been a coach who signs talent first and then coaches around that talent, and I think this is prime example of it. It is hard for me to question a coach who has over 700 wins to his credit, but I do think I can comment when I find a recruiting class to be odd. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Who knows maybe I am just still upset that I totally, missed the boat on predicting what Robin would do.

Lexie Nelson has actually been named to All Conference team, All State AA First Team and All Tournament AA Team 2007, 2008 and 2009 (her freshman, sophmore and junior year). Nelson became the All Time Leading Scorer – MALE OR FEMALE – at Butte High School in February 2009 knocking down John Dawson’s record from 1966-1968.

Nelson has played AAU ball most resently with future teammate Kellie Cole on Sandpipers & Sandcastles. Both future Lady Griz were recognized at The End of the Trail Oregon City Tournament. Cole for All Tournament – Oregon City and Nelson for MVP (blue bracket).

In addition to Nelson’s accomplishments on the basketball court, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA and is a member of both the National Honor Society and the Science Honor Society.

The combination of Cole, Nelson, Selvig, Sullivan and Hill with the current Lady Griz players and coaching staff should make for some outstanding basketball.
