Grizzly men’s basketball 2009-10 Roster

qvale

With classes scheduled to start in about a month I thought I would look at the current state of the four D-1 programs rosters. The third program I want to look at is the Grizzly men’s program.

This is not the official roster but it but I believe that if one was posted today this is how it would look. Most of these players were on campus for the grizzly basketball camps in early July, with the exception of Rasson Young. I have heard some rumblings of possible addition(s) to this roster by the time school starts but I believe if additions are made it will be as walk-ons. All of that said, though Tinkle has been the most serective of the D-1 basketball coaches this spring and summer so anything is possible.

Roster

Ryan Staudacher          6-3    shooting guard   senior
Michael Taylor              6-4    guard                       junior
Shawn Stockton            6-1     point guard           sophomore
Anthony Johnson        6-3    guard                       senior
Derek Selvig                    7-0   power forward     sophomore
Vassy Banny                   6-3    small forward       senior
Brian Qvale                      6-11  center                      junior
Jack McGillis                   6-6    small forward       senior
Mathias Ward                 6-7    power forward     freshman
Will Cherry                      6-2    point guard            freshman
Thurmond Woods        6-5    forward                    freshman
Eric Hutchison              6-8    center/forward    freshman
Raason Young                6-5    guard/forward     junior

Starting Five

Point Guard- Anthony Johnson (returning starter)tinkle
Shooting Guard- Raason Young (upset returning starter Staudacher)
Small Forward- Jack McGillis (returning starter)
Power Forward- Derek Selvig (not confident, but the rest are freshman)
Center- Brian Qvale (part time starter last year)

Back up

Point Guard- Shawn Stockton/Will Cherry (experience vs. talent)
Shooting Guard- Ryan Staudacher
Small Forward- Michael Taylor / Thurmond Wood (experience vs. talent)
Power Forward- Mathias Ward (could push Selvig, if Selvig is not aggressive)
Center – Eric Hutchison (should redshirt, but the only other center on the roster)

Mslacat’s comments: At the 1, 2 and 3 positions the Griz have lots of talent, experience, and depth. This should give Tinkle lots of options to play with next year in order to get his best players on the floor. At the power forward and center the Griz will be very thin and untested. Among the returning big men only Brain Qvale has started a game for the Griz and only Brain Qvale has played a complete season of college ball for the Griz. The front line will be leaning heavily on Qvale next season. Selvig will need to finally need to live up to his 2007 press clippings. He has the talent he need s to get aggressive. The rest of the big men will be untested freshman. Ward will be a big time scorer for the Griz, by conference time do not be surprised if he is pushing Selvig. Also do not be surprised if Tinkle uses a non traditional line up at times with McGillis or Woods playing the power forward spot.
