July Evaluation Period: The Lady Griz

glendive-carly-selvig3This is the last in a series of four posts, looking at what positions the Montana State men’s, Montana State women’s, the Montana men’s as well as the Lady Griz basketball programs may be looking to evaluate and ultimately fill roster spots next year. This post will cover the Lady Griz program.

The Lady Griz program will graduate, starting guard Laura Beck; potential starter, point guard Shaunte Nance-Johnson; as well as reserve center Shadra Robison. Additionally, Coach Robins Selvig specifically held two scholarships open from last year so he could spend them on this year’s class. This will give him a total of five scholarships to spend in 20010. It is not a big mystery though, on who he wants to spend his scholarships on. You could almost change the name positions he is recruiting from the center, forward and guard spots to the Sullivan Position, Selvig Position and the Hill position, but for this post I will stick with the traditional names for the positions.

Before I begin, I share one of my observations about Lady Griz recruiting. More than any of the other three D-1 coaches Robin seems to be a coach that simply recruits and signs the best player(s) available regardless of position or style of play, then lets the chips fall where they may. He then coaches the team that he has. I really believe that is what he will do this year with one possible caveat. He has to sign at least one point guard.

I know I am sounding like a broken record, but the number one position the Lady Griz need to sign, “by need”, is a point guard. They will need to sign at least quality point guard, and that guard will need to be capable of contributing for the Lady Griz on day one. Lack of depth at the point guard spot, could be an issue on this year’s team, and they will lose their projected starter next year. I am true believer in you can not have too many point guards so I personally think that they could use to sign two points this year. Of course Anaconda point guard Tory Hill would fill that bill rather nicely for this position.

The second priority “by need” would be a center or big girl who can contribute down the line. Selvig’s first commit of the 2010 recruiting, is his niece 6-2 Carly Selvig, and she fits that bill. Carly Selvig does not fit the mold of the bigger more physical Lady Griz centers, last 10 or so years. She is more of a throw back to the late 80’s early 90’s centers that were very mobile and good defensive players. Selvig could also play some at the forward spot down the line. I do not believe the Griz need this position to come in and play right away, but Carly Selvig might.

OK, I talked about the Lady Griz #1 and #2 priority “by need” now lets talk about their true #1 priority and that would be at the Jordan Sullivan position. While in a pinch Sullivan could play the Shooting guard or center spot, her natural college position will be the small and power forward in college The Lady Griz are very deep right now at those spots, but Jordan is simply too good to pass up. While she is not in the Josyln Tinkle class of player (few are) she would be a game changer in the Big Sky conference. She is in the Mandy Morales category of player right now with a Shannon Cate potential. The fact that she also is another niece of Robin Selvig’s makes the chances of the Lady Griz signing her is a possibility.

What ever scholarships are left will most likely go to the “best player available”. The Griz are loaded at the wing both in terms of talent and depth so one would think that the Lady Griz might stay away from that spot. Like I said earlier though, Robin recruits who Robin wants to recruit, so there are a lot of possibilities there. I can not be critical of Robin’s methods though, because, it seems to work out OK for him.
