Griz recruit: Arthur Steward

I have been told that the Griz are recruiting Arthur Steward of Casper JC in Wyoming. Steward is a well know commodity to both Montana D-1 schools and a lot of Montanans. Steward graduated from Casper Natrona high school in 2007 and was a recruiting target of both Montana and Montana State. Both schools have been following him since. Steward signed with Northern Colorado out of high school but never played for them, instead he attended Wallace JC his freshman year. He only played in their first 10 games, though, before quitting. Last year he attended Casper JC, but did not play basketball. I am told he will play with Casper JC this year as a sophomore.

Steward is part of the Wyoming 2007 high school class that maybe considered one of the if not the best boy’s recruiting class. That class featured James Johnson who was eightieth pick in the NBA draft that was held two weeks ago. It also featured 6-7Kyle Bullinger who is playing for Weber State and 6-9 Adam Waddell who is now playing for Wyoming. Steward was considered to be on a par with both Bullinger and Wadell.

Steward averaged approximately 20 points a game in high school, but really has not done much at the JC level. He has, though, had some nice performances at a few JC camps last summer and this spring, and that has resulted in him garnering some attention. I hear he may actually be qualified to sign this summer with a D-1 school, for the 2009-10 season. He visited Utah State this spring with the idea of possibly signing, but it appears that nothing came of that.

Steward was a 6-3 guard prospect out of high school, but he is reported to be 6-5 now and is capably of playing the guard or small forward. His size was an issue in high school but he appears to have solved that. He is an athletic, strong prospect with decent range. I really believe if he had signed with Casper (or any JC for that matter) and played a full year or two, he could be playing D-1 ball this winter,

I hear that Utah State, Cal St. Fullerton, Wyoming, and Montana are showing the most interest, currently, but I do not believe any schools are looking at him as a possible 2009-2010 recruit, but for the following year. The Bobcat coaches also know Steward very well and there is a possibility they could become involved but I doubt it.
