Bobcat Women Recruit: Chaunice Powell

I ran across something today on Rivals.com that I very rarely do. The name of a basketball recruit that it appears that Tricia Binford and her staff is recruiting.

NorCalPreps.com, part of the Rivals.com network is reporting that the Bobcats are recruiting Chaunice Powell of Newark Memorial high school of Newark, California. Powel, a 5-8 point guard prospect lead her Memorial team to a 20-9 record this past year.

Memorial plays in a league that does not get much recruiting attention, but Powell hooked up with high profile AAU team called East Bay Xplosion AAU to try to increase her profile this spring and summer and so far it appears to be working for her. The East Bay Xplosion will be playing in numerous Tournaments this summer on both coast and every where in-between.

Powell averaged 16 points, 11 rebound (which I have to admit is pretty impressive for a 5-8 point guard), 4 steals, and 4 assists a game while shooting 45% from the field, 25% from beyond the 3 point arc and 41% from the charity stripe. Powell is an athletic, heady point guard who can take over a game either with scoring or play making. I am also told she has the ability to over power other guards her size of bigger.

As you would guess with most of the player’s Binford recruits she is also an honor student.

She is currently receiving recruiting interest from Long Beach St., Montana St., Santa Clara, and San Francisco, but that list could grow as the East Bay Xplosion tours the country.

Powell would do well to put serious consideration into what Binford could offer a point guard. If there is one thing Binford knows how to do and that is to develop and teach point guards, I think there are very few coaches around that can do what Binford can do.

No I had to go back to Maxpreps.com and check that out again and they have her making 78 on 192 attempts. She only made 10 3 pointser also thi season, I I think it is safe to say she is not an overly gifted shooter.

Is that 41% figure a typo for FT%?
