Montana / Wyoming All Star Game – Boys

Gabe Rucker

In my first post about the annual Montana / Wyoming all star game I accused the boy’s game of lacking “true Star power”, and while that might be true, I still think this should be a very exciting couple of games.

While Montana does not have those, one or two, players that are the star of the team Wyoming does. Michael Dietz is a 6-6 forward who the Montana team will need to contain Friday and Saturday. Dietz has signed to play with the University Wyoming next year and is projected to play guard / small forward for the Cowboys. He is a player who could cause Montana fits. He can shoot the ball very well from the perimeter or take it inside and use his height to post up players. Dietz averaged 17 point a game last year but can also get it done on defense end. It will be interesting to see how Montana addresses him on defense.

The other area where Wyoming will have an advantage over Montana is it overall size. I think Wyoming will have a little better over all height and a definite advantage on raw size, although I do like Montana big men Bleskin, Brant, and Halverson, I just do not think we have the depth there that Wyoming.

Colt Idol

I think the strength of Montana is in its perimeter players. Cutler, Idol, Rucker, Carver, Crandell and the rest of them can put up points in bunches, and are also the type of player who leave it all on the floor.

Despite what I said about star power I really think these will be a pair of great games. I think these teams are very evenly matched with Wyoming possibly having a slight edge due to Dietz. Typically Montana will rely on superior over all talent and Wyoming trying to play a more physical brand of ball that even extends to its guard. I pretty much see that being the case this year. Keys to the game will be tempo and who is able to dictate the style of play. As I mentioned in my review of the Girls games, typically Montana will try to even out minutes and start 5 different players each night, I just do not know if they can afford to do that this year on the front line. Wyoming will play its best player most of the game. I think Bleskin is a perfect player to in against Wyoming and Bardts size will be needed to have any hope of defending the paint. Game management, and balancing players minutes will be the 2nd key to the game.
