2010 Montana Girls getting some D-1 interest

basketball2-main_full1I am going to touch on some of the Montana high school girls who I have heard may be recruiting some interest from D-1 schools. This will most likely be a two part series

Next years class should be one of the better classes in a while. Not only should it have depth but it should also feature some very high end basketball talent. Granted there is not a Jocelyn Tinkle in the class, top 10 national player like her and Karen Deden only seem to come around every 15 years or so, but there are quite a few player who should get some attention from upper end mid-majors.

This will be the first of what I think will be a two part series. The first part will be looking at the three athletes that seem to be getting the most attention. The second part will deal other athletes who are also getting some attention.

sullivan

Jordan Sullivan 6-1 Sidney Montana. Sullivan is getting the most national love among all of Montana high school players save Tinkle. ESPN Hoop Gurlz has her ranked as the # 27th wing player (small forward) in the country and has given her an over all ranking of 84. This compares to Tinkle’s 93, at this time last year. A first team all State class A and a Great Falls Tribune super state pick she averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds a game. I had heard about a year ago, that if the opportunity presented itself she might want to get out of state for college. I am hearing now from people in Missoula and around the state that she maybe leaning heavily toward signing with the Griz where her uncle Robins Selvig coaches. What ever the case Sullivan will/does have a lot of suitors for her services.

hill

Torry Hill 5-8 Anaconda Montana. Sullivan might be getting the most national attention, but from the folks I have talked to in Montana many consider her to be the best basketball player in the class of 2010. Torry who is a point guard averaged a whopping 25 points a game last season and upped that average to 36 points a game in the class a tourney. I had one person tell me they thought she would start on the 2009-10 version of the Griz. Hill has a lot of connections to the Griz program so like Sullivan it is thought to be a heavy lean for the Griz, but she is going to have lots of options as to where and what level she wants to attend school.

glendive-carly-selvig3

Carly Selvig 6-2 Glendive Montana. As the name would indicate she also is the niece of Griz coach Robins Selvig. Selvig is a post player who is projected to play both the 4 and 5 in college. She averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds a game for a very good Glendive team. Her real strength though is on the defensive end where she is known as to be shut down defender. Selvig has had multiple games this season where she has had 9 or more blocks a game. Of the three players I have discussed here she is the one who is thought to almost being a lock for the Griz

I am told that these three players, plus a few other Montana and Washington, are the main reason Robin Selvig held onto 2 scholarships from this year’s class, so he could use them next year. I have followed Lady Griz basketball since 1980 and in that time I do not remember the Griz every holding back scholarship. So when you couple the 2 scholarships from 2009 with the three that he will have in 2010, the Griz must be feeling pretty confident in the chances of signing an outstanding class next year.

Torry Is schedule to meet with Robin later this week. She likes the program alot and the Griz coaching staff has treated her very well. She still has a few other qualtiy programs after her but the Griz are diffently in the lead for her services. I am not sure what Jordan’s time frame for committing is although I think the Griz will be tough to beat

The Montana Big Sky Hoops AAU team just finished up there summer AAU season. The team went 3-1 in Pheonix, 6-1 in Portland, 5-0 Big Sky State Games, 5-0 Center Stage in Las Vegas and 3-2 at the Showtime National Chamionships at Mater Dei in Santa Ana Calif. They lost by 2 points in Pheonix, Lost in overtime in Portland and lost by 12 and 3 points in California without the services of Sullivan and Selvig. Sullivan has a cracked wrist and played with a cast in Billing and Vegas. Although a alot of schools have interest in Hill & Sullivan I think they will both fit in well in Missoula. Both Hill’s and Sullivan AAU experience will help them play early in college. The girl that really grew this summer is Jackie Mee from Libby. She will be a good get for whomever gives her a offer. Other members of the Montna AAU team were Blaire Brookshire Stevi, Jordan Pfau Missoula Loyola, Monica Grimsrud Helena High, Shaene Gilham Browning, Kali Durham Miles City and McKenzie Scofield of Livingston.
