Griz Recruit: Joe Harris

Harris

I have heard that Wayne Tinkle and his staff have offered 2010 recruit 6-5 Joe Harris from Chelan Washington. Chelan high school plays in the State of Washington’s lowest classification, 1A, and has been a power at that level for the past few years, finishing this past season with a loss in the quarter finals of the state championship tournament.

Harris is the son of Chelan high school head coach, who he shares the same name, and pretty much fills the stereotype of as a coach’s son. A well rounded player he played all five positions for Chelan team last year, and is known as a hard working scrappy player with a very high basketball IQ. He will need to put some muscle on his frame, but is still growing and could top out at 6-6 to 6-7.

He averaged some truly I popping stats this past year with 25 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and 3 blocks a game while shooting 53% from the field and 43% from beyond the 3 point arc. He has been named first team all conference every year since his freshman year. Harris is projected as a shooting guard in college.

A lot of D-1 schools in the northwest have been very interested in Harris since the start of this season including the Griz when he came out of the gate so strong, his junior year. The big question about Harris is how his very impressive play against 1A competition will translate to the D-1 level. Those questions are starting to be answered this spring as he has been playing outstanding ball for Friends of Hoop AAU team recently.

I am told that Washington State, San Diego, Eastern Washington, Montana, Portland, Gonzaga, Oregon State, Washington, St. Mary’s, Utah and BYU are all recruiting Harris right now and the list will get bigger. While I know the Griz are very interested from what I hear, by the end of the summer could be a prime target of many Pac-10 schools
