Griz FB recruit: Terrance Mitchell

mitchellRivals.com is reporting that the Griz are recruiting Terrance Mitchell from Luther Burbank high school in Sacramento California. Mitchell is a 5-11 175 lb corner back with 4.6 speed in the 40. Rivals give him a 5.7 rating which means the following:

5.7-5.5 All-Region Selection; considered among the region’s top prospects and among the top 750 or so prospects in the country; high-to-mid-major prospect; deemed to have pro potential and ability to make an impact on college team

Rivals give him a national position rank of 33 and three stars. Scout ranks him 21st nationally and is also a three star ranking. This is what ESPN had to say about Mitchell

Mitchell has a lot of coveted tools needed to mold into a solid defensive back at the next level. He has good height and a long, deceptively strong, wiry body. Still very lean but his frame hints of good physical upside. He lacks great speed overall, is a long strider, but plays faster than his 40 time would indicate and closes quickly on the football with good explosiveness. Flashes good recovery burst. Consistently undercuts and jumps routes with good underneath breaking quickness. Anticipates the pass well. Displays good range and explosiveness getting over the top of routes in deep coverage. Utilizes his long frame, great leaping and high-pointing skills to effectively defend the jump-ball. His good overall range coupled with his body length and sound adjustment to the ball in the air allows him to separate a lot passes. Is very comfortable around the football in the air. Overall he shows good footwork and is fluid and smooth in his turns as an off-man corner or deep zone defender — but does struggle with his transitional quickness at times when locked down in man-to-man. We would like to see him sink his hips more to assist and help limit receivers’ initial separation out of their breaks. Shows he can recover at the high school level but could struggle in college versus faster receivers. Lacks great speed. His good blend of range, ball skills and adequate run support skills make safety a likely possibility; his hips and speed may project better there as well. Overall, Mitchell has good versatility, athleticism, and a high ceiling of upside as a defensive back prospect. A guy who will compete for the football. Will likely start his career off at corner, and make a quality underneath zone guy, but we see safety in his future with added size.

He currently holds offers from Oregon, Washington State, Utah, and Cal Poly. UNLV, Nevada, Sac State, and Montana. Most of the teams in the Pac-10 though are currently in contact with him. His top choices right now are said to be Oregon, Washington State, Utah, and Cal Poly
