Huse Wraps it up ……

Part 1

Yesterday May 20th marked the end of the spring signing period, so I thought I might wrap up Montana State recruiting as it now stands. I will post a wrap up on the Montana State women’s program earlier and I will do something on the Lady Griz shortly. I am going to wait on the Griz men’s program a little bit.

Brad Huse signed 3 players in total this year and has invited 3 more have been offered preferred walk-on spots on the roster. All of these player, whether they are JC or high school players will have at least three years in the program so impact should be viewed in the long term and short term. None of these players are guaranteed impact player, given the Cats return 9 of their top 10 players, but a few of them will need to contribute. I also think everyone of them has a chance to contribute next year, but not all will. Redshirting decisions will be very interesting for the coaches next year.

One more thing before I start, Brad Huse is know as a coach who stresses defense, but from what I have hear from Brad, he is looking for 2-3 player, new or returnees, who can bring some an offensive punch to next year teams so the offence will come up often.

The Guards

Bryan Louff
6-1 Soph. JC transfer (walk-on)louff
What he needs to do: Bryan was a highly thought of point guard out of high school, but had a mediocre JC numbers. Known as a scoring point guard in high school, he needs to prove this year he can run a team. As the only true point guard on a veteran team to become a solid playmaker, who can take care of the ball, hit the open man and mesh with the returnees. He will need to score when open, but his role as a scorer will need to be put on the back burner until possibly his junior and senior year.

Wildcard: 6-0 redshirt freshman walk-on Trevor Hopkins will be competing for the same role next year. I am not sure what Hopkins future plans are, but he could be in the mix. I believe Louff has already used his red shirt year

Colt Idol
6-2 Freshman (walk-on)

09110 Colt IdolWhat he needs to do. When Colt first steps foot on campus for the summer second session, he is going to find himself buried deep in next years depth chart behind 5 or so players. Idol will need to prove that he can contribute as a scorer first, and not be a big liability on defense. He will need to show an aggressiveness, confidence and “ability to finish” on the offensive end to make a role for himself, while still getting it done on the other end. I really like Colts long term prospects with the Cats, and I am willing to bet he will earn himself a scholarship down the line, but it could be tough road to work him up past veterans and avoid a redshirt.

Wildcard: As cliché as it sounds there are no magic bullets, it is how hard is Idol willing to work this spring and this summer to step up to D-1 basketball could make difference.

Marco Bourgault
6-5 Freshman

MarcoWhat he needs to do:  With all due respect to Danny Piepoli, when Marco steps on campus he will be the best shooter on the Bobcat team. He was recruited to the team as an offensive player, and that is something he will need to do as a freshman. He can play all three guard/wing positions which will really help his chances of contributing, but he will need to be able to make himself a threat when ever he on the court. His biggest adjustment will be to the speed and the physical ness of the American game, but I think Huse will cut him some slack his freshman year if he can score.

Wildcard: If Danny Piepoli’s recovery from knee surgery lingers into October or longer Bourgault will play.

Part 2 the Big Men (to be continued)
