‘Cats and Griz recruit Wyoming’s Estes

estes_74Both the Bobcats and Griz are recruiting Laramie Wyoming basketball star Daniel Estes.  Estes is a 5-11 point guard who has had a tough year.  Eight games into this past season he severely injured his wrist.  The injury required surgery to repair his tendons in his wrist.  Prior to the injury Estes was averaging 21 and 4 assists points a game while shooting 46% from the field and 38% from beyond the three point line.   As a sophomore he averaged 13 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists a game.

In the fall of 2008 he really jumped onto the national recruiting radar when he was named the Co-MVP and top junior of the Annual Colorado Fall Shoot Out.  After his injury though I am told a lot of programs (including Wyoming) backed off to see what became of his injury.  Both the Bobcats and Griz have been on him from before his injury and have not backed off at all so maybe that will help their case(s). You have to imagine, though, if Wyoming starts showing an interest they may jump to the front of his list.

Estes has been out on the AAU spring tournament trail the past month and it appears he is back to his old form so look for his recruiting to heat up this summer.

Here is a write up on Estes from the 2008 Colorado Fall Shoot Out:

Daniel Estes (5′11″ PG Laramie, WY) was named the Co-Most Outstanding Player and Top Junior in the event. He was strong all day long, showing a passion to improve while leading the skill instruction and playing very well in the games. He is a very sturdy point guard that handles the ball like it’s on a yo-yo, defends very well and hits shots from every range. He also gets to the rim well, is very unselfish with the ball and loves to get his teammates involved. He is a wonderful student and would be a great fit in the Ivy Leagues or a similar level Mid to Low Major Division I school.

One final note with the Bobcats recently receiving a commitment from 2010 recruit point guard Casey Trujeque, you might wonder how this will effect their interest in signing another point.  I would guess they will continue to recruit Estes, through the summer and then evaluate their need come the fall.
