Signing period is about Half Over

basketball2-main_full1

With the signing period almost half over and very little to report I thought I might touch on or update on a few things I have heard.  Some of this will read like a, who has and who has not signed yet.  The one thing though that all the Griz men, Griz women, and Bobcat men all have in common is that none of these programs will announce any of there recruits until they have finished there recruiting all together.

Bobcat Women:

  • The bobcat Women are sitting back and giggling at the other 3 programs, as they prepare for next year recruiting, sipping G & T’s on there veranda’s in Bozeman.
  • I do not think they will fill their 15th scholarship unless something to good to pass up comes along.  Maybe a late D-1 transfer/redshirt?  Having more new players than returnee’s would be tough, better to save the scholarship until next year than to add an 8th so so player in to the mix.
  • msulogo160
  • Carrie Ojeda:  Remember her, the high school player who I claimed would sign with the Cat’s.   Carrie signed earlier this week with Eastern Washington.  I have done a little digging and it is quite clear that she committed to the Cats in March – I can produce a news paper article where she is quoted as saying so.  From what I hear from Washington she decided to entertain other offers from some bigger schools, and MSU signed Bak.Carrie changed her mind and signed with Eastern Washington.  In any case in my opinion Ojeda will be a big time player in the Big Sky, although Bak may be more immediate impact player.

Bobcat Men

  • The Cats have signed at least two players Michel Swita and Colt Idol but will not announce them until they are finished.
  • Alpha N’Diaye:  He signed with Sacramento State, over the Bobcats.  He had family who lived in the Sacramento area which influenced his decision quite a bit.
  • Thomas Bropleh:  Bropleh is a 6-6ish Charles Barkley clone from Denver.  He is a combo forward who averaged 25 points 8 rebounds a game who visited Bozeman a few weeks back.   Former Bobcat assistant Shawn Dirden was helping the Bobcats in his recruiting, but it appears he will be attending a prep school in New Hampshire next year and reopen his recruitment next year as a 5th year senior.
  • Mitrell Clark:  I am told it is quite possible we have or will get a visit, but I have not heard anything solid yet.  He is still unsigned.
  • Matt Qualls: Has cut the Bobcats from his list.
  • Dominique O’Connor:  The Cats are still on his list.  I would love to have him.  I just do not think it is in the cards.  He is still unsigned.

Lady Griz

  • This is the one that has surprised me and a few other folks I have talked with.  It was griz_1thought that they had everything wrapped up.
  • Rumor #1:  I have heard that they may be loosing an underclass player, but I have not heard who that player might be.  I have an idea but I do not anywhere firm enough to print it.
  • Rumor #2:  Robin may hold a scholarship open this year because of the great Montana recruits coming up next year.  Selvig, Sullivan and Hill to name a few players who are considered a big lean for the Griz.
  • Rumor #3  Robin and the crew have a pretty highly rated point high school point committed.
  • Fact: Kelsey  Hildal a 5-4 point from Kalispell has agreed to walk-on to the Lady Griz.  I have talked with a few people that I know from NW Montana who I respect a great deal, and they think Hildal is a solid D-1 talent, worthy of a scholarship.  Especially a team that really needs to sign a quality Point guard this spring.  This lends credence to rumor #3.  She is a great pick up for the Griz.

Grizzly Men:

  • Shawn Stockton:  My sources in Spokane tell me he is gone, finished, history.  My sources in Missoula are telling me they are full of #@%*$, and they actually point to other folks leaving.   I have enough egg on my face I think I will wait and see.   The Griz coaches are extremely quite on what they are up to this spring.
  • Steven Bennett:  Bennett is a 5-8 point guard from Citrus JC in California.  He has been making the JC ball tournament circuit this spring and has really improved his stock.   Six of his Citrus team-mates have signed already with 4 year schools.  Bennett, though is still unsigned.
  • Ryan Sweet:  Ryan a 6-7 post from Whatcom JC in Washington has had what is known as clock issues and had to sign with a D-2 school.  He is still unsigned.
  • Brandon Durham:  Durham is a 6-8 power forward who the Griz had in for a visit last fall.  I believe they are still talking with him about next year, but as of three weeks ago were holding off offering him.  Sounds to me like a back up plan guy.   Still though I like Durham better than Hutchison, and that is not a knock on Hutchison, but praise for Durham.  He is still unsigned.

That is all I have time for

Sorry I forgot to answer this post. Clock issues is somewhat a generic term that refers to the NCAA complex rules about when the eligibility clock starts and when a player uses up a year of eligibility. In the case of Sweet, he attended his first JC out of high school, then attended a 4 year school, his second year, but did not play basketball that year. His third year out of high school he went back and played JC ball at a different JC. As I understand it becuase he attended a 4 year school, and then went back to a JC he lost a year of D-1 eligibility. As I was told if Sweet was to transfer to a D-1 school he would have only 1 year of eligibility left, but at the d-2 level of NAIA level they would not count the year at the 4 year school since he did not play ball that year.

Things get real complicated in D-1 ball if you transfer from a 4 year school to a JC and then back to 4 year school, not to mention if you start out at the a JC.

what is a “clock” issue? do you think the lady griz are still in the mix for a taller post player, especially a 6’2″ post player from washington whose name you mentioned earlier?
