Bobcat recruit: Doug MeDermott

mcdermott1It is that time of year when High school athletes are hitting the spring circuit getting seen by college coaches and college coaches are zeroing in on targets for next years recruiting classes. In basketball that means the AAU circuit.

The latest news is being reported by Rivals.com that Doug McDermott, son of Iowa State head coach Greg McDermott is seriously looking at Montana. Doug is quoted.

“I’ve been talking to UNI, Creighton, Indiana State, Loyola Chicago and Montana State,” Doug MeDermott said Thursday. “I can call them any time and they can call me once a month. Those are the schools I’ve talked to lately. And I talk to the Iowa State head coach quite a bit.”

McDermott is a 6-7 senior to be combo forward who plays for Ames high school in Ames IowaAmes high school also features top 10 ten recruit 6-7 small forward Harrison Barnes. Barnes holds offers from North Carolina and Duke among others. McDemott is a late bloomer who was a 6-0 shooting guard as a freshman, but in two years has grown 7 inches and now plays the power forward spot. He came off the bench to at the beginning of last year but after being made a starter last December he led his team in scoring at 18 points a game. He also averaged around 7 rebounds a game.

He is a player who is not afraid to mix it up inside, and is a very good natural rebounder, has very good knowledge of the game. Physically he will need to put more muscle on his frame for the college game. Rivals have him listed as a small forward prospect, and he has the range to play that spot, but I am told, will need to improve his ball handling though.

Scout.com had the following evaluation.

Doug McDermott, SF, Martin Bros.: He’s not just Harrison Barnes high school teammate. McDermott is carving out his own niche. In the 8 a.m. game, the jumper was working. More importantly, he’s a balanced player who is savvy around the cup. He’ll begin as a strong mid-level prospect…

…. Good, heady player. Makes plays off the glass and around the rim as an active small forward

As mentioned in his interview, Iowa State, Creighton, Indiana St, Loyola Chicago, Northern Iowa, Montana St. seem to be the schools he is most interested in at this point. Northern Iowa, though, is the only school on the list that I know for sure, has offered, him. NIU may be considered the leader of this group, (if he does not play for his father) this is where his dad coached before moving on to Iowa State, and his brother is the team manager for NIU.
